Newsgroups, Windows live mail

I uninstalled anything to do with Windows Live. I even went thru the
registry and deleted all the entries for Windows Live. I tried everyday
for over a week before deciding to reinstall windows from scratch.
I was a programmer for 35 years. I do know how to do stuff manually with
windows and tried everything I could think of. Finally gave up.
You must have had another problem. Removing all of Windows Live works for
everyone else.

In your case, you may have done the only thing possible to rid yourself of
WLM 2011. I think it was worth it. :)

I can't talk about Windows Mail, since I hardly used it at all,
but as far as I'm concerned, Windows Live Mail is (and even was)
*much* worse than Outlook Express.
How so? Like I said, I never got into OE much, but in my limited
experience, Windows Mail and Windows Live Mail look pretty much like
OE, and seemed to operate in similar ways.

Yes, similar--but not identical. As I've said many times, I consider
Windows Mail to just be a new version of Outlook Express with a
different name, and Windows Live Mail to be a still newer version with
a different name.

But regarding in what ways I found Windows Live Mail to be much worse
than Outlook Express, I wish I could be specific, but I can't. It's
been too long since I tried it for me to remember the details.

I started in with Usenet with Web-TV. I started with a computer with a
Win.ME, then XP, Vista, and now W-7. I tried OE at first since it came
with the PC. Tired it for E-Mail but never liked it as much as web based
E-mail, so I just have stuck with Yahoo.
I tried T-Bird twice. first time was long ago because so many people
said everything was better than OE. I could not get it to work so I gave
up since to me OE seemed to be working fine.
I then tried it again with Vista because for a while MS had screwed up
WM so it would not work with Usenet. As usual MS was claiming nothing
was wrong on their end. I again could not get T-Bird to work with my
news feed but before trying to find out why someone suggested a free
news feed that is called Eternal September now, it was something else
then. It worked with the WM for some reason, so again I gave up on T-Bird.
When W-7 came along I loaded WLM and it was close enough to OE and WM as
far as a news reader that I could figure it out fast so stuck with it.

Thanks to all for the information. I suppose that I can stay with TB
for newsgroup access, although I don't like it for email.

The problem arose when I bought a new PC with Windows 7, downloaded
Yahoo mail, and found that it no longer provided access to newsgroups,
as far as I can tell. (Same with Windows live mail.) Regarding the
programs such as Gravity specifically intended for newsgroups, what's
the advantage of such a program over what I have now?

I don't like it for either news or email. If I read news on a Windows
machine I'd install slrn.exe and notepad++ (or gvim, but I don't
recommend gvim to others)

Thunderbird works, but I find it pretty annoying. It's been awhile since
I last used it (it was when 3.0 came out, iirc) and so I can't remember
specifically, but one thing that annoyed me was how it handled
..signature files

Most people seem to like Thunderbird's email component better than its
newsgroup part.

You're wrong about Windows Live Mail. It does do newsgroups (but
badly.)

Most dedicated newsreaders have much stronger filtering features than
do OE, WLM, and TBird.

I think Gravity is a good reader for offline use (like, if you are
dial-up) because you can tag article headers, then go online and
retrieve all the bodies at once. I even paid for a license when it was
still a commercial product. However, I don't like it in general because
it has no capability for archiving messages to folders.

Folks, I have a stupid question. - After going to this newsgroup via
Thunderbird, I now find that I can't get back to Thunderbird. When I
click on the icon for TB, I can only get to this newsgroup. (So, I can't
see the accumulating mail on TB, and can't get to the list of other
newsgroups.) - I must have clicked on something I shouldn't have, but i
can't seem to resolve the problem. Does anyone have suggestions?

Unless you are dissatisfied with your mail program, I can't imagine
why you'd install another one. Thunderbird is a mail program that
incidentally does newsgroups. You are much better off to install a
program that is intended to do newsgroups. My own personal favorite
is Gravity, but there are plenty of other choices that are superior
to Thunderbird, let alone WLM.

WLM works fine for me. I can read newsgroup messages, post to newsgroups
and have my replies automatically be put at the bottom of a message.
That's
all I require in a newsreader. WLM can also combine binary files that are
posted
in pieces although I don't use that facility too often. What features do
other
people need that WLM can't provide?

Tom L
Do you see how your comments and Stan's comments look like they came
from the same person? That's just one of the things that's completely
broken in the newsreader you're using.

Stan's post has two greater than symbols, my reply has one.

No it doesn't. In the message you replied to, Alex Clayton's reply had
two greater-thans. Your reply didn't add any, so both yours and Char's
replies are indistinguishable.

Your newsreader is making a mess of this thread.

Now the situation is getting quite confusing.
The only reason I'm reading this newsgroup is because I'm considering
getting a win7 PC.
I can learn a lot from newsgroups about problems.
So, is Windows Live Mail now the standard email client in Win7?

On this old Sun Box, and getting long in the tooth, I'm getting little
support from Oracle since Sun sold out.
No more updates... nothing. So I'm looking to ditch this box.

No, there is no standard email client in Win 7. Some vendors include
Windows Live Mail, but in that case it's the vendor doing it, not
Microsoft. As always, you're free to use any email client you'd like
to use.

As Nil pointed out, you're wrong. The greater than symbols you refer
to were there before. Your client added none, just like it added none
in your latest reply, so your latest comments and my previous comments
are all run together on the same level. Do you not see this??

I'm using version 2.0.
On my version there is on the side "all folders".
I have a news folder and an inbox folder.
Best bet tho is to go back to their website and download the latest
version. I think
it is version 3.2 or 3.3. It should copy over all of the older settings
and files.

So who told you this?
I am using Win.7 and WLM and it is working just great.
Since you run Microsoft Windows Live Mail 14.0.8089.726, yes it does.
If you upgrade to WLM 2011, it's going to be a mess!

Are you sure?

I think it was done on purpose to try and persuade users to leave Usenet
and go to web based, moderated forums.
I think they may find that Usenetters won't give up that easily. I can
think of a few that would change O/S rather than give in to Microsoft's
attempts at total domination and switch to their forums.

Very funny Scotty - now beam down my clothes.

I know for a fact WLM 15 doesn't support usenet.
Anyone who says different is a complete douche.

You ought to know.

X-Newsreader: Microsoft Windows Live Mail 15.4.3508.1109

If you gotta use it, put in a self-made post separator at the very least.

This is really wierd. All I see are two colored vertical lines.
I suppose I really should buy a new PC and see what this is all about.

You're using version 14. The worst offender is version 15.

Your version:
