MVP Help on Saving File As ".html

B

Bill

I never had this problem on XP but now I'm encountering this with 7. I
have a *.doc file that I also save as an html file and upload both to
my website sponsor. In the past with XP, when I elected to save as a
"Web Page", it will ask if I want to overwrite the old file, I check
yes, and it overwrites. Now, in 7, I seem to have three choices:
Single File Web Page, Web Page, and Web Page Filtered. When I click on
"Web Page", it gives me a message window saying "The folder that this
Web page would use to organize supporting files is already reserved
for ue in the current location. Please choose a different name or
location for this Web page.
(C:\My Documents\...\XXXXX.htm)

My old file was XXXXX.html but the new save won't override the old
file and I don't want it saved as XXXXX.htm. Please advise. Thanks!

Sorry. I'm just a dummy, not a MVP, but I'll give you my best wild
guess. You don't say what browser you are using. I use IE 8, and
I don't recognize those save commands. In IE 8, the choices are:

Webpage, complete (*.htm, *.html)
Web Archive, single file (*.mht)
Webpage, HTML only (*.htm, *.html)
Text file (*.txt).

When you save a file (i.e. filename.htm) as "Webpage, complete" a
subdirectory named filename_files is created to hold pictures, style
sheets, and other supplemental material. It is linked to the core
filename.htm.
(If you delete the saved HTML file, the subdirectory disappears, too.)
However, if you try to overwrite the same file with another "Webpage,
complete"
operation, it fails because it can't create a new subdirectory with the
same
name. You will have to delete the old saved file, first.

If your original *.doc file is just text and does not require images or
style sheets, save it as "Webpage, HTML only." Since no subsidiary
folder is created, you can overwrite it directly. You could also try
"Web Archive, single file," but I don't know if it would be accessible
with a
different browser.

Please note there no such thing as MVP on these newsgroups; MVP title
was a scam started by that monolithic conglomerate called Microshit and
now that program is all but disbanded.

If you want any help from Microsoft nutters then use their forums; If
you want any real assistance then repost your question without the title
MVP anywhere in your post.

Hope this is absolutely clear to you.

Good luck.

So what is the question or what is your problem to make you post that
spam link on these newsgroups? Were you just trying to prove to
yourself that you are indeed a dummy in real life as well?

Whatever they were or are, those calling themselves MVP's have bailed
me out many times...

Hi, Bill.

Microsoft did NOT "all but disband" their MVP program, as some misinformed
misanthrope posted. It is alive and well.

As you probably know, Microsoft did close their public news server and moved
all their support to their forums, such as:
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us

Some MVPs - including myself - could not make the transition from newsgroups
to forums. My participation last year was not enough to earn me an MVP
Award for the current cycle - and probably will not again in the future. I
enjoyed my 8 years as an MVP and am proud to have received the Award for
those years. But I'm the same guy helping where I can, just as I did before
I ever heard of the MVP program, and I'll continue to do that. Many MVPs
and former MVPs tell me exactly the same thing. We help because we can, and
because we want to help, not because of any award or title.

But I have no experience with designing web pages and can't help with your
current program. But many others here - both MVPs and others - do have that
knowledge and will be glad to help.

so why did they kick you out from that most secretive Organization?
Either they have disbanded that secretive organization or that you were
completely useless giving misleading and reckless advice. What is it
from these two then?

Nor could I so I've continued reading my newsgroups.

I don't post often but I appreciate reading problems that other users
have and solutions to their problems.

Welcome to the newsgroup and I'm quite happy to be educated by people
such as you.

I'm sure everyone appreciates any help from anywhere, but you'll make
yourself very unpopular if you top-post and use WLM in newsgroups.

And I am so glad that y'all are still here in usenet-textland.

I've dipped my toes in the online-forum surf but this is way
*way* easier and faster.

I'm very grateful for all the tips & help I've gotten here & in other
MS-program-oriented groups, directly and indirectly. I'm going back over a
lot of messages (& stuffing numerous tips in my new OneNote notebooks) since
I had to make the jump into W7 and also started using (trying to, anyway)
s/w that I hadn't been involved with before. Thank goodness for good
archives & a news server with good retention!

One thing Microsoft has done to discourage using traditional newsgroups
is make Windows Live Mail the worst possible newsreader. I'm getting to
the point where I will ignore WLM postings. If you are going to continue
with NNTP style newsgroups, please get another newsreader. There are
lots of free ones around.

I don't how good or bad it is as a news reader, but it certainly is
horrible as a news writer ... and that is inflicted on everyone, not
just the WLM user.

Another idea is to go back to the previous version of WLM. At least
that one didn't have the quoting problems that the current version has.

Sorry not really been following the thread.
Please note that in the part of my post that you clipped I said that I
was able to open it: "I said yes and it opened fine".
Yes I know, you said you could open in fine IN INTERNET EXPLORER. I
thought you might be interested in opening it in your default browser.

OK, thanks - that makes sense, although the other way was good enough
for that one time only :).

Also, I had noticed from your link that the plug-in enables FF to save
pages in the mht format, which could be a real convenience. I
bookmarked it for later consideration.
