Finding an XP network drive

When I first installed Windows 7, it took for ever to find my XP drive
shared over the network. It seemed to find it faster and faster as
time passed. I thought that some of the patches might have improved
the way Win7 finds XP drives.

I have just re installed Win 7 (and all updates) several days ago and
now it is taking forever again to find the XP drive.

What caused it to be able to find the drive faster in the past, and
why can't it do it now?

indexing or synchronising

What do you mean by that? Indexing what? Indexing the local file system
might slow down operations in general, but not networking in
particular. And it's initially a one-time operation that operates
almost undetectably after that. Synchronizing what?

I've had a similar problem. From the XP machine, I see the W7 drive
almost instantly. But, from the W7 box, it takes forever. I may as
well physically walk over tot he XP machine, pull out the drive and
connect it to the W7 box. People here told me to use the IP address of
the XP machine when looking from the W7 box. This does work and it
works right after you power up both machines.
