Default file icons?

How can I change the default icon for a file type shown by explorer
in a folder? I know how to change the program that accesses the files, but
surely there should be a way to change the generic icon that is associated
with that type of file. Any help gratefully received.

The "File Types Manager for Windows" will do that and a lot more,
including editing the context menu, adding/removing file types.

You might try the following freeware. It worked fine for me.

Right click the folder Chose Properties. Next chose the customize tab and
then at the bottom Change Icon
