Hello there,

I've been having some problems with repeated bluescreens, freezes and "broken glass" screens, and the wonderful folk here have been very patient over the last year or so trying to work out why.

Last night I had enough, so I reinstalled Windows. Nothing fancy installed now, just graphics and sound card drivers, Steam, Origin, my word processors etc. Fresh clean start.

Same damned bluescreens!

Attached is the dumpfile and my CPU-Z report. I was playing The Sims 2 at the time of the Bluescreen. The only other thing of note both before and after my reinstall of Windows is some unusual hard drive activity just before the crash. It tends to click, then whir quite loudly, over and over, like it's searching for a file it can't find. I've ran chkdisk and analysed it for defragmentation. Both my (physical) hard drives (I have three drives, C and E are partitions of one drive) are at 0% fragmentation.

Is my drive dead? Is my graphics card dead? How can I be having the exact same trouble with a brand new fresh install unless its hardware related?

Mate,

Can you post the event log that was create when you ran chkdsk.

I would suggest that you install SP 1 and any drivers for your computer and then see what happens.

The crash dump is inconclusive.

Derp, sorry I hadn't realised SP1 hadn't been installed. Done now.

Also, weirdly it didn't create an event when it ran Chdsk. I distinctly remember running it, but, no event appears in the event viewer.

Last night (8 or 9 hrs in total) I ran a bootable hardware testing program on my PC. It found no faults with anything So, fingers crossed this isn't a hardware issue. Quite how it's following me across installs though I am unsure.

Mate,

Re-run chkdsk and look for the event log, once you have SP1 installed.

Yep, your disk has reached the end of its useful life.

134203391 KB total disk space.
60167960 KB in 199843 files.
151836 KB in 32737 indexes.
4 KB in bad sectors.

The bad sectors will only get worse, no matter what any utility say's. Time for a new hard drive.

Well, crap :)

At least it gives me the excuse to get a SSD for my operating system.

So we think that this is the cause of the problems? Would explain why it's still occuring after a reinstall.

Possibly, depends what data was on the bad sectors.

But If was to guess, I would be 80% positive.

Regardless the disk needs to be replaced.

Right, well, I got a 512mb SSD to replace it (got a new box too, the old one was tatty, but that's immaterial to bluescreen issues)

Little nervous to actually test it now and see if it does the same. I guess I have to though

Before you start, see if the SSD needs a firmware update.
