Cloning Laptop Win 7 HP 64-bit

Bob Hatch

I want to clone my Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit, which is on my 100GB laptop,
to a new, larger laptop drive. Has anyone used either of these products
for 64-bit Win7HP successfully. I've seen some reviews that say it won't
work for the 64-bit version.

I clone my drive on my Win 7 Pro 64 bit system on a regular basis. Well,
actually I clone my laptop and desktop both. I've used Copy/Wipe and
Acronis and they both work without a problem.

I can't speak to the items you referenced. I do clone using a SATA dock
for the drive, and yes, I've used the clones and they work.

I respect that you have an opinion. Don't confuse that
respect with really giving a crap what it is.

I've not used the software mentioned here, Apricorn EZ Gig IV, however
the cables and all shown here should work fine.

I use XXClone myself to copy Windows from one hard disk to another.

I purchased an SSD which came with a USB caddy to move your existing
spinny disc into and a copy of Acronis to copy the contents to the SSD.

Acronis managed to display a handful of sector write errors (or
similar), at the end of which it pronounced "copy succesful" but of
course it wasn't. I chucked the acronis CD in the bin and used gparted
as I should have done from the start.

What make is your new HD?
Some HD manufacturers have a free download that does exactly this
(but only works if one of their drives is in the machine.)
These utilities are a cut-down version of Acronis True Image
(I have the full version of Acronis True Image Home 2011 which I've
used several times to clone Win7 boot drives.)

I've looked into Acronis, and I've downloaded and read the user's manual.
For me, it's just too complicated. Also, the reviews are mixed, and your
experience is one I've heard before.

Thanks for the reply.

Hi,

The current drive in the laptop (Dell Inspiron 1420) is a Toshiba
MK1246GSX 120 GB SATA/300 5400 RPM 8MB 2.5". By the way, I misinformed
you all...the system is not 64-bit, it's 32-bit. (My desktop is 64-bit
Win7HP.)

I don't know what brand I'll get for the larger drive, but probably a
Western Digital.

I have used the second cable (USB to 2.5" SATA drive) with good results,
but like you I haven't used the Apricorn software.

That's one reason why there are so many options available. For me,
Acronis is dead simple and has worked flawlessly since I started using
it some 5-7 years ago or so. For others who don't like it for one
reason or another, there are plenty of other options. The important
thing is that most people should use _something_.

I'm with you, Char. Acronis, to me, is simple and does the job. By using
a SATA dock, hooked up to an eSATA connection on the computer I cut the
time for a clone from around 3 hours to 36 minutes. Also, like you said,
to each his own. It's what works for "you", but it won't work if you
don't have it or don't use it.

You will be better off using Acronis or Norton Ghost because these two
products are tried and tested by the millions on this planet. If you
don't know how to use these products then you should learn but there is
no point in using something that is completely alien to most of the
people in the computer industry.

There is a free limited Version of Acronis True Image on the Western
Digital site that will do exactly what you want to do.

Thanks. I just went there and I see the free WD-Acronis download. It
looks like cloning will work in a desktop setup with the new drive
installed in an empty bay, but I'll have to read the manual to see if
it'll clone a laptop's old drive to a new USB connected drive.

If there is a WD disk in the setup (internal or external on USB), yes it
will, I've done it with my laptop.
