Cannot connect?

Friend uses Orange/TMobile internet with their wireless dongle.
Problem is when he tries to connect he gets a "cannot connect" message.
Cancelling the message a few times and fiddling about a bit he can
usually connect and it works OK till the next time.
I suspect it has something to do with the dial up connection he
originally used but the thing is we can't find any traces of it!
How can we get rid of these traces for good, if we physically remove the
old 56K modem will it do it?
Replies appreciated.

This is a long shot, but when I had trouble with an older
Windows OS attempting to dial, it was an Internet Explorer function.

If you look in Internet Explorer, Tools, Internet Options,
Connections Tab, there is a "Never dial a connection" option.
I have that currently selected, and no attempt seems to be
made to use the dialup modem. My dialup modem is for
emergencies, when the ADSL connection is down, and I
need to check the ISP web site to see if they acknowledge
the lack of service or not. And currently, I'm not pestered
by the OS doing dialing on its own.

I have had that happen in the past, but I can't remember now what
triggered it. I changed something on the machine, and suddenly
the OS was trying to dial out on its own. To fix it, I
used System Restore, and took the system backwards one day,
to a point where it was working right. That seemed to be the
most expedient way to fix it.

You can try the "never dial a connection" option. But your
idea of simply ripping the 56K hardware out, would probably
be my preferred way. It's pretty hard for the machine
to dial out, if the modem is removed.
