BSOD soon after Windows 7 loads up

Hi. This is my first post and I'm a bit of a PC novice...
My PC, an HP DM4 64bit purchased directly from HP, approx 6 months old, has just started giving me problems

When I power up, Windows starts to load, I get to the Windows password screen, enter my password, and Windows continues (very slowly) until my desktop appears.

But after just a couple of seconds the PC crashes, with a BSOD appearing very briefly.

If I boot up in safe mode I don't have any crashes

I've tried system restore, but it just hangs for hours.

Windows was pre-installed on the PC, so I don't have the CDs. There is an HP Recovery partition though

Any help please?

Thanks

Hi cj1739 and Welcome to the Forum.

We really need your Minidump files to help you. As you can boot into Safe Mode without issue would tend to indicate a driver issue.

To ensure minidumps are enabled:
Go to Start, in the Search Box type: sysdm.cpl, press Enter.
Under the Advanced tab, click on the Startup and Recovery Settings... button.
Ensure that Automatically restart is unchecked.
Under the Write Debugging Information header select Small memory dump (256 kB) in the dropdown box (the 256kb varies).
Ensure that the Small Dump Directory is listed as %systemroot%\Minidump.
OK your way out.
Reboot if changes have been made.

The .dmp files are located at C:\Windows\Minidump. Until a .dmp file is generated, the Minidump folder may not exist.

Go to your C:\Windows\Minidump folder. Copy the .dmp files to a new folder on your desktop. Zip up that folder and attach to a post.

To attach files to your post, when typing a new thread or posting a reply click on the Go Advanced button below the editing window. When you are in advanced mode you can scroll down to attach files through Manage Attachments OR click on the paper clip icon in the toolbar above the editing window.

HTH

Something has gone badly wrong with the registry. If a kernel debugger

hardware problems or filesystem corruption.
It may occur due to a failure in a refresh operation, which is used only

As a Priority:

Norton is known to be a cause of BSOD's on Windows 7 systems. I suggest that you uninstall Norton using the Norton Removal Tool in Safe Mode. Download Blue Screen friendly Microsoft Security Essentials as its replacement. Make sure Windows firewall is enabled!

Apart from that I'm afraid I'm lost as I personally haven't come across a stop 51 code before.

Maybe if you can burn an ISO file to disc with SP1 integrated ;) you might be able to do a repair install. To keep Windows open so you can initiate the repair you may possibly have to goto Start > type msconfig in the search window. In msconfig select the Boot tab, then check (tick) the Safe Boot box with Minimal settings.

Thanks for the reply.
I'll consider removing Norton, but must admit I'd be reluctant to do so. It's been on my laptop since new (about six months ago), and I haven't had any problems with the laptop until now.

Consider creating a new user account and see if you have any problems in that.

That's a bummer because lots of similar threads on a Goggle search blame a corrupt user account.
Can I just ask, when did you update to SP1?

Also, are you able to get the ISO file I PM'ed you about??

Hi there,

Troubleshooting and fixing BSOD would be always easy if you follow advise from one thread.

Hello again
Not sure when I installed SP1, but it would have probably been as soon as it was available.
Not had a look at the ISO file option thing yet - need a bit of time to do that so may have to wait until the weekend for that option
Another thread (as Cpt Sparrow refers to above) suggested that I enable Driver Verifier and post a dump when I get the next BSOD. But when I enable Driver Verifier, the laptop no longer crashes - instead it boots up to my desktop and after a minute or so the cursor vanishes and the computer freezes - will not respond to anything on the keyboard. If I then disable Verifier, I'm back to BSOD on boot up.
Again any more ideas and thanks :(
