Both laptop and desktop Vista and W-7....

Both laptop and desktop Vista PCs, including the new W-7 will no longer work
with dial-up. What MS update did this to our 3 PCs? Yes, it still works on
XP but we don't use the old XP PC anymore. How do we get dial-up back on
Vista and W-7?

Why won't you ever supply details? Is that that you don't really want
help?

What details do you need? Yesterday afternoon we could no longer use
dial-up with these 3 computers. We could use dial-up with the XP computers.
The device check says the modems are working but the 3 PCs can no longer see
their modems. What other details do you need?

Oh, two of the PCs have Vista and one has W-7. When we try to make a
connection the PCs suddenly say they can't SEE their modem. The XP PCs
still see their modems just fine.

They didn't bother my Win7 notebook. The modem still works fine.
If you go to Device Manager on one of the three, does the modem show up as
being OK, no yellow or red icon? If you open the modem properties, is there
a diagnostics tab? If so, click on the 'Query Modem' button and see what the
results are.

What updates did you install ? nobody in here knows exactly which
updates you installed so how can anybody tell you which one might of
caused your problem.

If you don't know where to find the latest updates installed then go to
your Start search box and type in Windows Update, after that window open
click onto View update history and then post which updates were
installed yesterday.

"Doctor, yesterday I felt good and today I feel bad. What's wrong?"

"Mr. Mechanic, yesterday my car ran, today it don't run. Why not?"

"We could no longer use dial-up" could mean just about anything. The
modems don't respond, they don't connect, they drop the connection,
they throw up error messages. What? You don't bother to describe what
you're talking about.

"The device check". What is that?

What did you do since yesterday?

Did you check Windows event viewer for errors?

And on and on. Really, don't you know how to ask a question? We can't
read your mind.

Admit it, you just want people to beg you for stuff, right?

If you are actually sincere, please read this:

Nothing. No new software on any of the PCs in weeks. Just the usual MS
updates. When I couldn't connect with Vista again today I turned on the
laptop with Vista. That one couldn't see it's modem either. So my husband
added the external modem to the W-7 PC but W-7 can't see the (external)
modem either. Only the two real old XP machines still see the modem and can
get inline with dial-up.
Did you check Windows event viewer for errors?
The "event viewer" said the folder is empty. How do I find the information
in the event viewer? I had to do a search for it since I don't know how
else to find it. Is there a special folder I need to find?
And on and on. Really, don't you know how to ask a question? We can't

If I knew the answers why would I waste my time here asking? How can I know
the info you need since I cannot read your mind and am not a techie, a geek
or a PC nerd?

Our Dell laptop can't see the modem now either. The only NEW stuff on any of
these 3 PCs that can no longer see their modems was MS updates. But removing
the MS updates didn't help nor did system restores.
If you go to Device Manager on one of the three, does the modem show up as
being OK, no yellow or red icon?
How do I find Device Manager? Agent-Ransack-Search found a folder with that
name but it was empty.

If you open the modem properties, is there
a diagnostics tab? If so, click on the 'Query Modem' button and see what

This is the result right now:

If so, click on the 'Query Modem' button and see what the
results are.

When I queried the modem it said: Success and some other stuff I couldn't

What updates did you install ? nobody in here knows exactly which updates
you installed so how can anybody tell you which one might of caused your
problem.
The PC is set to auto-update MS security updates. We didn't install
anything on any of the non-XP machines in weeks. The XP machines are fine.
If you don't know where to find the latest updates installed then go to
your Start search box and type in Windows Update, after that window open
click onto View update history and then post which updates were installed
yesterday.
We already did that and removed the MS updates but that didn't help, nor did
system restores on the 2 Vista and 1 W-7 machine. Again, both XP PCs are
fine and still see their modems.

You should use Windows help system sometime. You may be surprised.

This all indicates that the modem is recognized and responding to
the computer.

It sounds more like the program you are dialing out with rather than a modem
problem. Do you dial out to get to the internet, or is the modem line used
for faxes only?
I checked my neighbor and her modem works fine also (Win7 on an HP
notebook). She uses hers for faxing documents, so I had her fax me one and
it worked fine.

We get the error "Windows cannot detect modem" or something similar. If we
try to add our dial-up information it says "Windows can't detect a modem" or
something similar. Why are we getting that error when the PCs can
communicate with the modems? So we can't even add our ISPs information
anymore on these three machines. The only thing they all have in common is
they auto-update MS security updates.

The modems are for dialing out only. The Vista's have internal modems and
the W-7 PC has an external modem. The old XP PCs have internal modems and
have no problem getting online. Our dial-up is a backup to our lousy
Satellite service that doesn't work in the rain, drizzle, snow, heavy cloud
cover etc.

The easiest way to 'find' device manager in Win7 is to click on the
Start Orb and in the search box at the bottom type in 'Device Manager'.
It should then show up as the first item listed in the search results.

And yet the PCs can't see them when we try and dial-up.

Windows Help System? If you mean those confusing Forums where finding
replies is almost impossible, no thanks.

OK i did that. But there's no information there as to what the problem can
be with the 3 PCs. Just a list of things on the W-7 PC including the new
Modem we added today. How is this helpful? Is there supposed to be
information there of some kind?

Found it and the external modem (W-7) is listed on the list with no other
information. W-7 can communicate with it but when we try to add our ISP
info it says "no modem detected." On both Vistas it's the same. They
communicate with their modems but then say "Windows cannot detect a modem"
when we try to go online. None of you ever heard of this problem before?

No faxes. The line is for PCs only and the two old XP machines are not
affected.

Ours are one Gateway laptop w/Vista. One HP desktop with Vista and one HP
desktop with W-7. All three developed the problem at the same time.

The other two PCs that are unaffected are an old HP XP/SP2 and a custom
homemade XP PC a friend put together for us some time back.
