A tale of two Windows 7 64-bit SP 1 installations, one a failure. Help needed.

I have two Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit computers. One is an Asus
laptop that came with Windows 7. The other is an HP desktop that came
with Vista and the promise to provide the upgrade to W7, which I
installed on 11/1/2010.

Laptop: It took an excruciating 4+ hours to download and install the
W7 SP 1 upgrade, but everything went without a hitch and SP 1 is now
on the Asus laptop. I followed the advice to shut down or disable any
firewall or anti virus as soon as the SP 1 download ended. (I actually
did the laptop upgrade second; the desktop's failure came first.)

Desktop: Attempt #1. (All reboots in both attempts are done by the
install program, not by me.) (I can't recall if I exited or disabled
my firewall and anti virus programs (Norton) before attempting this
first upgrade.)
Step 1: Download the huge 2GB SP 1 universal install download and
burn it to DVD. I set this aside.
Step 2: Ignore the DVD and download the 87.2MB package. At 18%
download I get Error# 80200053. I use the Windows Update
Troubleshooter, which took only seconds to say it fixed the problem.
Restarted the download.
Step 3: After 45 minutes, the download was finished and it reported
"Preparing to Configure Windows". At 51 minutes it reported being 99%
configured, then "Failure Configuring Service Pack. Reverting
Changes." The program then rebooted.
Step 4: After reboot, another "Preparing to Configure Windows"
followed quickly by another message about failure and reverting
changes.
Step 5: Finally got to the password entering screen and an "ERROR
E_Fail(0x80004005)" message. SP 1 isn't installed.
Here endeth Attempt #1.

At this point I downloaded and ran the System Update Readiness Tool,
all 300.4MB of it.

Desktop: Attempt #2.
Step 1: Disable or exit the firewall and anti virus programs (Norton).
Step 2: Used the 2GB "All Versions" disk to update to SP 1.
At 48 minutes in: "Configuring Service Pack Stage 1 of 2". At 57
minutes in, the reboot starts.
Step 3: Reboot. At 60 minutes in: "Stage 1 of 2, Preparing to
Configure Windows".
Step 4: At 65 minutes: "Failure Configuring Service Pack" (at 99%
done). "Reverting Changes". At 75 minutes, there's a reboot.
Step 5: At 77 minutes: "Stage 1 of 2....Failure...Reverting". At 92
minutes: Reboot.
Step 6: At 94 minutes: "Stage 2 of 2. Preparing to Configure Windows".
Gets to 100% complete.
Step 7: Gets all the way to the icon-laden Desktop, then gives the
error: "ERROR DS_S_Success(0x0). and SP 1 isn't installed.

QUESTION: What are these errors? How do I fix them and successfully
install SP1 on my Windows 7 Home Premium computer?

If all else fails try running sfc /scannow from a command prompt. It
fixed my problem in installing SP1.

If all else fails try running sfc /scannow from a command prompt. It
fixed my problem in installing SP1.
Thanks for the help and the suggestion:

Did the sfc /scannow. Got this:

"Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully
repaired them. Details are included in the CBS.log
windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example C:Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log"

Because I don't know what the hell I'm looking at when I see the very
long CBS.log, I am including only the very tail end of it:

"POQ 120 ends.

QUESTION: Do I now try to install SP 1 again?
Yes, as Alias said - what have you got to lose?

FWIW, my CBS.log was over 13Mb in size, and had hundreds of
incomprehensible entries. There were a few I was interested in -
repairs to sqmapi.dll files - which were necessary to allow me to
install SP1.
