The Retailer that I buy all my hardware from is currently offering OEM versions (64bit) of Win 7.

Do these sound like good prices. Remember we are talking Aus. $

Premium $135
Pro $175
Ultimate $219

I'd either go Pro or ultimate

I'd strongly suggest forking out a little extra for ultimate because you can convert it to home prem/pro if you want [but you would need to get an other key for it]

These prices you guote are retail prices and not OEM prices. Check newegg for OEM prices, they currently have free shipping.

LeHam - MOST users don't need the extra features offered by Ultimate, it's a waste of money.

I would recommend Pro, it has nearly all the features and saves money. All you get extra with Ultimate is BitLocker and 8,000 language updates.

True Crypt does a better job than BitLocker and is free!

@Kalario - Mychael is from "down under" and so Newegg isn't available to those blokes.

The latest currency converter shows that in US Dollars the Pro version OEM would be $149.19

Newegg's price is $139.99 w/free shipping, so a $10 difference isn't that bad really.

I found a copy at an Australian site called Devon Software of Windows 7 Pro OEM for $129.99 plus $12.99 shipping in Australian Dollars.

Thanks Nibs for settting me straight.
Well, I hope you didn't take it the wrong way, I was just trying to clarify things a little.

I hope Mychael will find a cost-effective version that meets his budget.

I'm cool.

BTW I a just bought a win 7 Home edition 64 bit from newegg, going to do a clean install on a 1 year old dell laptop E6400. 4GB memory and 160 GB hard drive. This is going to be my 3rd install of win7 and for the first time going to partition the hard drive. Keeping my fingers crossed.

That's cool! I hope it all goes smoothly for ya! Pretty soon you'll be an expert at the Windows 7 install process!

Just remember that when you get to the portion of the install that shows the hard drive and such to delete all the existing partitions and create new ones.

When you create the new partition(s), the install asks for it in MB instead of GB.

So if you want a 32 GB partition, you take the number 32,000 x 1.024 = 32,768 MB, if you enter that number you'll get an exact 32 GB partition. And so forth, such as 64 GB = 65536

Have Fun! Be sure to download all the necessary x64 drivers for your notebook before the install.

Is it as simple as downloading all the necessay x64 drivers for my notebook and saving them on an external HD, then after the win7 install, installing all these drivers?

Newegg's OEM Pro Upgrade runs about US$119. That would be about AU$137.50, so you could probably do better. Try ebay.au

Ebay can be okay. Also can be a bit of a gamble with O/S... Think I'd rather have a 'box & CD" from a shop.

If it's OEM you will be lucky if it HAS a box - likely just a disk shrink-wrapped to a piece of cardboard.

All of the eBay OEM Windows 7 I've seen come in the standard OEM box which is a translucent poly DVD case, similar to the movie DVD cases in size. They have the manual and the COA with Product Key attached on the inside front cover.

Several of my friends and clients have purchased these on eBay from reputable sellers with a 100% money back guarantee.

I checked at Newegg because I noticed Nibs showed a higher price. Dam* this OS is too popular! They have jacked the price up another $20 to the US$139. Greedy buggers.

Nibs, please show me a listing to what you are calling an OEM please. I know the Dell OEMs are on a brownish red disk and appear to come in a simple white DVD envelope. The upgrades (which is what I bought) come in a plastic case with one rounded corner and a blue cover but those are Microsoft upgrades not OEM. They look the same as the Full version except have the word Upgrade. An OEM version on eBay is supposed to include a harddrive (or computer) to be legal,

All that's really "required" is a computer component to be purchased.

A couple of times I bought XP Pro OEM along with an IDE ribbon cable when I did installs for clients.

Here's a shot of the OEM DVD case, out of it's heavy paste board slipcover:

Here it is as it is sold in stores and online:

Here is the case opened up showing the manual on the right and the disc. Notice the COA label on the back of the case in the lower right:

A back view of the case with the COA label.

Here's a screen capture of the Newegg website:
