Windows 7 updates change

I have about 36 windows 7 pro machines on hand. After running fine for 2-3 years, a few months ago, they all started going into a thrashing mode when we start them up in the morning. This meant about an hour of nearly unusable machines. Which is quite unacceptable in a work environment. Digging in, I found it was Windows update taking all the resources. The systems have 2G of RAM. We also have Office 2010 on, so that also does some updates through the same service.

So, I changed the auto update schedule from 3am every morning (while systems are off), to 12pm on Wednesday (during lunch time).

That worked great until this week. Now, Windows is making updates outside of that schedule it seems. I'm back to thrashing mode to start the day. I've gone ahead and upped the RAM in a handful of systems to 4G as a test.

Anyone else encountering this issue? How did you deal with it?
