Starting in Firefox 20, downloads are displayed in a pop-up panel
attached to an icon on the navigation toolbar. For details, see the
following article.
https://support.mozilla.org/kb/find-and-manage-downloaded-files
That article says "The Downloads window will open when you download a
file (that setting can be changed in the OptionsPreferences [sic]
window - General panel)."

If there is such a setting in the General panel of the Options
window, or on any other tab of the Options window, I can't see it.

I did apply the about:config fix that Ken1943 and you provided, and
that seems to have done the trick.

It's there in older versions of Firefox - I think, they have forgotten
to update that particular bit of information. I use the ESR releases of
Firefox and Thunderbird (wonderful, no unnecessary and unwanted chances
for a year at a time) so mine is only on 17.x and it's still there.
However, I've made a note of the about:config option, because when
versions 24 comes round I may have to update, and going back to the old
window will be one of the first things I do. On the other hand, if there
are too many changes that mess things up too much too much, I may stay
with 17 ESR for good, anyway. I'm at an age where it may well see me out :)

Maybe it's changed in 20, but in 18 it's right there under
Options-General. Just take the check out for "Show the Downloads
window when downloading a file."

Since you seem familiar with Firefox, can I venture to ask a question
about the new version 20?

Is there some way to get rid of that down-pointing arrow they've
added at the upper right of my screen, and especially the annoying
pop-ups every time I download anything? Yes, I can click on each one
to dismiss it, but it's an annoying interruption. Thanks!

This option is also in 19 but not in 20.

D'oh! I was looking at the General subtab of the Advanced icon of
the Options box, instead of the General icon of the Options box. I
found the download setting.

May I just take this moment to say that that two-level design really
could be improved? :)

As I wrote on the 14th, I was wrong and it is indeed there. I was
looking at General under Advanced under Options, instead of General
under Options. (And who came up with THAT structure?)

But when I wrote that, I also corrected "NOT" in the subject line to
"NOT", which took the whole thing out of thread. My apologies for
the misdirection.

It doesn't seem too annoying when it's down in the status bar (but
unless you have installed "status-4-Evar" you've probably not got one
any more.

Nice add-on! Thanks.
