Window Icons in Firefox and Aero

W

Win 7 Laptop.

Maybe this an Aero problem.

In Firefox, I typically have four windows open with probably 10 tabs in
each. When I'm at home with my desktop I can show say four windows icons
together. Moreover, if I pass the mouse over one of them, the full view
of that window appears, so that I can see it fully. Taking the mouse off
the icon causes the full size one to assume its regular position. This
is different for my laptop.

However, I'm on the road with my laptop. All I can get by passing the
mouse over the four icons is the the four icons side-by-side. No full
size window appears for any of them. Of course, if I click on an icon,
the full window appears at the top level. How do I get the laptop to act
like the desktop?

As Paul noted it could be related to enabling Aero Peek.

Also possibly of note - Aero features do require a Windows 7 Home Premium or greater and a use of a Windows theme may be necessary
to display Aero graphics (note: A Windows theme can be modified and saved as a personalized/named user theme and still meet the
'use a Windows theme' requirement)

To expand what I said to Paul - I *did* try his suggestion. Disabling
AeroPeek has no effect on the behavior in question.

Also, disabling Aero altogether replaces the icons by text labels when
the mouse cursor passes over a taskbar icon - although that behavior is
closer to what W. eWatson described :)

I hated the Basic Theme and got back to Aero very quickly...

How do you do this? :)

That sure looks like the deal the OP needs to check.

OK, tell the truth - you know this stuff because you're the guy who
designed and coded Windows 7.

I tried to make the change on my laptop (W7 Home Premium), but gpedit is
apparently not available there.

So I'll try it here and then reboot to see what happens.
Well, I did it. And it had no effect.

So I read the above site a bit more carefully and made (on the laptop)
the listed registry change.

No change there either.

And yes, I remembered to restart the laptop after making the change and
before testing it.

I need to get a life :)

I read your reply to Paul and then read the link that Paul gave
and noticed at the bottom of the page under 'Related Posts' the
second link and I thought that must be it !!!
Not really clever, just lucky. :)

You're right, it has no effect!
I'll have to Google a bit to see if I can find out why.

In Firefox, in Tools | Options | "Tabs" page, the bottom setting is
"Show tab previews in Windows taskbar". To get the above behavior (i.e.,
the display all the tabs when the mouse hovers over the application name
in the taskbar), be sure "Show tab previews in Windows taskbar" is
checked. (Actually, for me, thse are little representations of the tabs,
not filling the entire screen.)

It sounds like this is the case in your desktop but not with your
laptop.

I tested and at least on my Windows 7 PC, chaning this option and
clicking on Ok produces instant change in behavior.

Since you seem familiar with Firefox, can I venture to ask a question
about the new version 20?

Is there some way to get rid of that down-pointing arrow they've
added at the upper right of my screen, and especially the annoying
pop-ups every time I download anything? Yes, I can click on each one
to dismiss it, but it's an annoying interruption. Thanks!

Did you check about:config ?

Try entering about:config in the URL bar,
and go through the preferences in there,
and see if there's one for "stupid new features" :)

You can customise it like every other icon on toolbars and status bars.
Right click the bar, customise, then drag the offending item to a
different position, different bar, or back to the window with other
unwanted icons to remove it.

It doesn't seem too annoying when it's down in the status bar (but
unless you have installed "status-4-Evar" you've probably not got one
any more.

Starting in Firefox 20, downloads are displayed in a pop-up panel
attached to an icon on the navigation toolbar. For details, see the
following article.
https://support.mozilla.org/kb/find-and-manage-downloaded-files

If you'd like to disable this feature in favor of the old Downloads
window, perform the following steps.
Type about:config in the address bar and press Enter.
Press the big button to bypass the warning.
In the search box, paste browser.download.useToolkitUI
In the search results, double-click browser.download.useToolkitUI to set
its value to true.

Did you check about:config ?
Yes, I did before posting -- I should have mentioned that. Filtering
on "download" bought up a few dozen entries, but I couldn't find one
that seemed to be relevant.

Perfect -- thanks, Ken! That did just what I want.
Your welcome. I watch the Firefox group and just started a file cabinet
folder to write hints down so I don't lose them. ABOUT TIME !!!!
