Win7 x64 Pro freezes randomly

Win7 has been randomly freezing for the past month, having installed about 2 months ago. The computer freezes up, no response from mouse, keyboard, or monitor -- However I am able to see the screen (no BSOD) as long as it doesn't go to sleep.

I've tried a couple potential solutions. Switched power management to Performance and turned off all sleep / power down options. Cleaned registry with registry cleaner. Ran chkdsk. Tried to update all drivers (seems all are up to date by win7 standards). I've looked through the Event Viewer but I am no expert and do not know how to troubleshoot System Events.

If anyone has any tips/tricks/workarounds/potential solutions I would appreciate any help. Please see my sysinfo below:

Did Windows 7 work up until a month ago and then suddenly start freezing? It's quite a difficult thing to troubleshoot as it could be due to many different things. If it started suddenly, was there anything installed around that time which may have caused it (new software/hardware or a driver update)?

Does anything seem to trigger the freeze and does it still happen in safe mode?

I do believe Windows 7 was working fine for awhile and then suddenly started freezing. I can't recall if there were any updates / installs made at that time. I usually install Windows Updates as they become available.

The only common element to the freeze that I've noticed is that the PC always freezes when I leave it sitting idly. However, it does freeze while I'm working on it as well. I don't observe any power spikes, I'm almost positive the resource usage is low. The most recent freezes happened while sifting through Windows Event Viewer as I looked for errors around the times the PC froze. Didn't find any. Another freeze happened while I was watching a show via VLC Media Player. It has frozen in safe mode while I was opening up the control panel to check power settings.

If you could suggest an order of operations to delineate this problem I would appreciate it. Maybe troubleshooting from the outside-in to rule out hardware, then ruling out each peace of software.

As Ian said, it could be due to many things... I'll focus on the hardware issues. Have you run a pass or two of Memtest86+ 4.0 to verify the RAM is stable? It's not likely but should be ruled out.

As the video card sounds like an older model it might be failing, does it run games well? You can stress test it using FurMark 1.7.0, but please keep an eye on your GPU temps. If you don't know what your GPU temps are beforehand, GPU-Z should display them if the card supports the ability.

Have you made sure all the system fans are working fine and are clean? Particularly the GPU and Chipset fans, as these tend to fail within a few years. If the chipset overheats sufficiently it could lock the system.

Ran the pc in safe mode -- froze after 20mins or so of idling.

Ran the pc in bios only -- froze after a couple of hours idling.

Ran a windows memtest -- froze after 16% of the memory had been tested

I'm going to try the Memtest86+ because I've heard it boots from a cd rather than running from pc. Next I'll check the video card using the FurMark tool Kougar suggested. I've checked and cleaned the fans on the interior periodically -- but I will go in again to make sure each one is running when the machine is powered.

I'll get back to you with results of these tests. Any further thoughts ??

I was wondering if your Lan light is lit and blinking nonstop when the PC is on and you are not using the net. It just crossed my mind.... Are you sure your PC is secured and safe from viruses, trojans etc...

If your modem is wild even when PC is frozen you are bugged.

I'm having the same problems, my copy of Windows 7 (Home Premium) turned up yesterday. Did a fresh install and all updates etc and it just randomly freezes. First all open programs freeze then a few seconds later the mouse/keyboard freezes and you have to hard reset.
I've been using linux for the past few years so have no idea where to start troubleshooting windows.
I doubt it's a hardware problem as I've had this PC for about 6 months and never had any problems on linux

If your computer locks up in the BIOS then that's a sure sign the hardware is not stable. You should check that the RAM settings are correct, mostly likely it is a memory related issue. If the test freezes or the tool shows errors then take out all of the RAM modules and try testing them one by one to see which work and which error. At this point don't even mess with the FurMark tool... also make sure your chipset heatsink isn't getting to hot to touch if it does not have a fan on it.

Descendent, start out with running the Memtest tool I linked above and see if that survives two passes.

I've tried to run Memtest a couple of times and the PC keeps freezing during the test. First time was 6mins into the test and second time was 25 seconds in. I've taken out the RAM and replaced it with spare RAM I had lying around and PC still froze. I think the problem lies in the mobo or powersupply. I'm going to try and drop in a spare mobo of similar power consumption to see if the power supply may be dying.

Next steps? Possibly a new motherboard? Thoughts?

This is happening to a lot of people, so I highly doubt it is a hardware problem although of course it is still possible in some cases.

If you can make a note of what time the PC freezes, then in Event Viewer go to Diagnostics-Performance/Operational, post what error messages there are for that time.

When this happened to me I formatted the C: drive and did a FULL CLEAN install, however I don't know what options you have when installing an Upgrade.

Also someone mentioned Linux, if you changed any BIOS settings to suit Linux they may cause problems when installing Win 7, trust me I know.

memtest finished two passes, no problems. BIOS settings haven't been touched for linux, plus I updated the BIOS and set everything to reccomended settings hoping it would fix the freezing but nothing.
Had read on a few places that updating ATI drivers fixed freezes for some people but about 20 minutes after updating (and restarting) to the newest ATI driver it happened again
