Whats Up With My Graphics Card Drivers?

Dell XPS M1330, thought before I upgraded to W7 that I had a decent graphics card, now my Sleep button is shaded out and no screen savers can be used?

Ran Belarc Advisor and it states I have only

Standard VGA Graphics Adapter [Display adapter]
Generic Non-PnP Monitor

How can I find out what card I have and how to update the drivers?

Thanks.

Use SIW, see the following:

SIW is an advanced System Information for Windows tool that gathers detailed information about your system properties and settings and displays it in an extremely comprehensible manner.
SIW can create a report file (CSV, HTML, TXT or XML), and is able to run in batch mode (for Computer Software and Hardware Inventory, Asset Inventory Tracking, Audit Software Licenses, Software License Compliance).
The system information is divided into few major categories:

  • Software Inventory: Operating System, Installed Software and Hotfixes, Processes, Services, Users, Open Files, System Uptime, Installed Codecs, Software Licenses (Product Keys / Serial Numbers / CD Key), Secrets (Password Recovery).
  • Hardware Inventory: Motherboard, Sensors, BIOS, CPU, chipset, PCI/AGP, USB and ISA/PnP Devices, Memory, Video Card, Monitor, Disk Drives, CD/DVD Devices, SCSI Devices, S.M.A.R.T., Ports, Printers.
  • Network Information: Network Cards, Network Shares, currently active Network Connections, Open Ports.
  • Network Tools: MAC Address Changer, Neighborhood Scan, Ping, Trace, Statistics
  • Miscellaneous Tools: Eureka! (Reveal lost passwords hidden behind asterisks), Monitor Test, Shutdown / Restart.
  • Real-time monitors: CPU, Memory, Page File usage and Network Traffic.
SIW is a standalone utility that does not require installation (Portable Freeware) - one less installed program on your PC as well the fact that you can run the program directly from an USB flash drive, from a floppy, from a network drive or from a domain login script.
SIW can be distributed freely (ftp, archives, CD-ROMs ...).
Client Platform: Windows 7 / Vista / Windows XP / 2000 / NT4 / Me / 98 / Media Center / Tablet PC
This is a very extensive little piece of software! You may have to click around a little once you have it up and running but it will show all of the hardware you have on your system.

Go here to download it: http://www.gtopala.com/

I use the "Standalone English Version" click on that button and the download will begin right away.

Looks like I need to "Trial Pay" for this service?...I'm pretty sure the Lappy had Nvidia graphics card or video card before I installed W7.

Looking in the user manual that I just found the XPS M1330 has a Video Card ( is that the same as graphics card?) nVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS

So if I just download this driver will it solve my problems?

Go Here to download your driver from nVidia's website, it's the latest version for the GeForce 8400M.

Version: 195.62 WHQL

Release Date: 2009.12.04 The DELL website shows drivers dated in 2008! Don't use them.

Operating System: Windows 7, Windows Vista

Language: English (U.S.) File Size: 116 MB

Henfold,
Have you attempted to update the graphics drivers? Have you checked directly with Dell to see what graphics adapter is being used and ensure that it is compatible with Windows 7?
Should you require additional assistance and guidance, Microsoft does have an official Windows 7 Support Forum located here http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/category/w7itpro/ . It is supported by product specialists as well as engineers and support teams.
