Virtual PC question

I've been having problems using a couple of pieces of older software since
going to Win 7 Pro. One is the Palm Desktop for a Palm Pilot PDA and the
other is a music collection database called Audiolist Plus which has both a
desktop component and a Palm PDA component. Since I found a 64-bit driver
for the Palm Desktop I'm able able to sync the Palm Pilot and its desktop
software, but I can't get the Audiolist software to install under Windows 7.
I'm considering installing both in Virtual PC XP to see if both will
function properly. That won't be quite as convenient as getting them both
to work under Win 7, but I don't need to sync the Audiolist software very
often, so that approach would be workable. My question is whether it's safe
to install the same software in both Win 7 and in the Virtual PC, is the
Virtual PC walled off to the point where there will be no conflicts? Thanks
for any useful advice.

Installing this or any other program in the virtual machine (XP Mode
or other OS) will not interfere whatsoever. It would be like
installing it on a second, separate PC.

Why not try working with the developer of Audiolist Plus ?
The entry here, seems to be pointing at UAC as related to
issues they have. That's different than software which is
functionally busted (i.e. an API changes on the OS and the
software doesn't have an interface to work with).

The pictures here gives some ideas about what WinXP mode can do.
I'm not sure whether the USB interfacing features will work
in all situations. The interface doesn't seem to be the same
in WinXP Mode, as the facility that VirtualBox has (where you
can identify specific USB VID/PID hardware identities as being
"owned" by the guest OS).

I'm guessing, based on an answer here, that if the Palm can be
detected in Device Manager in Windows 7, then it may be possible to
use it in WinXP Mode. An answerer here describes a procedure for hotsyncing
the palm from WinXP Mode.

http://social.technet.microsoft.com.../thread/01ee8887-b2d9-4001-bcfd-c4e0579d3aa1/

"To get the Palm T3 to hotsync in Windows 7's XP Mode window after
installing Palm Desktop 4.1.4e there with Hotsync set to "Local USB":

Press the hotsync button on the cradle, then go up to the USB menu
at the top of the XP Mode window and click it. You should see
"Palm Handheld - Attach". Click that and the hotsync should start.
Unfortunately you have to do that every time you hotsync; haven't
yet found a way to attach the Palm's USB port permanently to
the virtual machine - it disappears as soon as the hotsync is done,
and the USB menu says "No device found."

Yes, its completely isolated. I like http://www.virtualbox.org/ over
Virtual PC myself.

Did you see this? (applies to Win 7 too)
http://www.wakefieldsoft.com/faq.html#46

Will the software work on Windows Vista?

The software will work on Windows Vista, however some settings need
to be changed for older version 4 products. Note that version 5 and
higher products will run on Vista without any changes. Before running or
installing the software on Windows Vista, please follow these steps:

Go to Start
Click Control Panel
Click User Accounts and Family Safety
Click User Accounts
Click Turn User Account Control On or Off
Click Continue (if asked)
UNCHECK the Use UAC Control checkbox
Click OK
Restart the computer
Run the installer again

For Palm users, the above steps will need to be done before
installing the Palm Desktop sofware as well. We also recommend that you
use Palm Desktop version 6.2 or newer and Hotsync manager version 7.0 or
newer, which are Vista compatible versions from Palm.com.

After the install is complete, you can turn UAC back on. If you do
this, you will also need to do the following: Find the icon under Start
/ Programs, right click the icon and select Properties, go to the
Compatibility tab, check the Run as Administrator box, click Apply, then
OK.

I was going to contact them Monday, I thought I'd give try Virtual PC XP
over the weekend.

I can sync okay in Win 7 since discovering this 64-bit driver, works like a
charm.

The problem is so far I cannot get Audiolist Plus to install, hopefully the
Wakefield folks can help with that. I believe I qualify for a discount on
any new version, so if that will do the trick (with a little tweaking) then
I should be back in business. Thanks.

How did I miss that? I thought I'd seen everything related in that FAQ, my
aging eyes/brain didn't absorb that.

I was hoping to avoid the new desktop, I've heard it's more of a downgrade
than an upgrade from the old version.

Thanks for the help.
