Remove show desktop icon

Is there any way to remove the show desktop icon on the far right of the
taskbar next to the clock in Win7 x64?

I still use the one in the quick launch toolbar on the left, a old
hangup from the 98, 2000 and XP days.

Not a very well written program, play a full screen game and go back to
the desktop and the icon is there again even although the programs
remove button is greyed out.

Right click the task bar .. uncheck 'show the desktop'

oops ..
You can disable aero peek by right click task bar and choosing
properties, but that does not remove the button.

AFAIR it is possible to change the icon's appearance so that it is the
same colour as the notification area. It thus appears to have been
removed, but the space it occupied cannot be used for anything else.

In the end I created another show desktop icon in the Quick Launch
toolbar, and just ignored the idiotic one on the right..

Not necessarily if the op uses(prefers) the one on the QL Toolbar and has wrote memory (from using it since Win98) regarding its
location.
