Really slow Win7 shutdown

D

Dave \Crash\ Dummy

When I shut down or restart my 64 bit Windows 7 Ultimate, the "Shutting
down..." screen takes forever to finish. Well, about 90 seconds. The
only AV software I am running is MSE, and I have tried disabling the few
resident apps I have running. Nothing helps. Any ideas?

Linux?

OK, I'm kidding, but my boot and shutdown are so slow that I ascribe the
problem to Windows 7 plus my proclivity to install a lot of
applications, some of which are (I think) running in the background when
I initiate shutdown.

Translation: I think you're stuck with it.

Second translation: wait for some people here to tell you and me that
I'm wrong, & also tell you - correctly - why I'm wrong.

I guess I should time my shutdown - maybe it's a lot better than I
think.

I have two Win7 machines. They both shut down in under 20 seconds.

I also have an old XP machine that takes about 40 secs to shut down
normally, but sometimes it goes through a long process of "saving your
settings" and that shut-down can take up to about 2 minutes.

Dave, see if Win7 has reported anything.
1. Control Panel/ Performance Information and Tools/ Advanced Tools -
Performance issues at top.
2. Event Viewer/ Applications and Services Logs/ Microsoft/ Windows/
Diagnostics-Performance/ Operational.

Events in the 200 series are shutdown events.

Maybe you clearing the page file on every shutdown.
Administrative tools > Local Security Policy > Local Policies > Security Options.
Shutdown: Clear virtual memory pagefile
Default is Disabled.

Bingo! I had that enabled for some reason. I changed it to Disabled, and
Windows shuts down lickety split. Thanks!

I had a chance to check my shutdown time after updating something a half
hour ago. I was careless in looking at the watch, but I managed to see
that it was only in the 30-40 second range.

Once I corrected the setting described in Dave-UK's post, my shut down
time dropped to 14 seconds.

I don't care how long mine take to shut down, partly because I shut
down very seldom. Put let me point out that how long it takes to shut
down varies depending on what you have running at the moment (in the
background as well as the foreground).

Hmm, after searching in the Administrative tools, I couldn't find the
Local Security Policy. With a Google search, I found out Win 7 Home
Premium doesn't have that feature. :-(
Microsoft provide details on the relationship between a policy setting
and its registry setting. They are Excel spreadsheets and are useful if
you are OK with editing the registry yourself.

regedit :
go to : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control
change the WaitToKillServiceTimeout to 800

As my shutdown is about 20 seconds, I figure it's disabled so why bother.
I got the impression from your post that you were disappointed that
you did not have the policy settings available in Win 7 Home Premium.
I gave you the link so you could, if you wanted to, change policy
settings in the future that are normally unavailable to you.
