Re-direction & yellow screens

Hi There

Not sure if this is the right group or not (apologies if not)....

I have a machine with Win7 ultimate and have an extremely annoying problem
that every time I go onto the net whether it be IE or Firefox, I keep
getting re-directed to some obscure website. When I do get re-directed
Avast will come up with a warning.

I don't know if it's related but sometimes my machine will freeze and the
only thing I can do is hold the power button down until it shuts off. Then
when I re-boot I get to the 'welcome' screen, then just before it goes to
the desktop the whole screen will go yellow. The only way to get out of
this is to open the task manager and re-boot. This process could take at
least 2 or 3 times before I can get back to the desktop....

I have tried many and various virus checkers and anti maleware/spyware
checkers but they find nothing!

I'm thinking that I might have to do a complete format & re-install which I
want to try and avoid as best I can, hence this post to see if anybody has
any ideas.

Thanks in advance.

You probably have some sort of malware on your system. If you are getting a
message as you indicate above, care to share it's exact wording? Can make a
big difference...

Does it behave this way in IE safe mode? What is the warning that Avast
comes up with? What is the URL of the obscure website?

What have you tried? A lot of freebies won't find the newest viruses.

You ARE infected with something, but you've given nothing for us to go on.

Sounds like a DNS hijacker. Check the DNS addresses in your
modem.
Usually it's 'obtain automatically' but you could try a public
DNS server like http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/
Also run MBAM and see if it turns up anything.

Details on Malwarebytes (MBAM) are here.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malwarebytes

Their website has a link to the free version.

http://malwarebytes.org/

If the malware you've got, is any good, it's going to
fight your attempts to run MBAM. You can download the
file on another computer, and bring it over, and even then,
you may need to rename the file, to something like "surprise.exe"
so it'll run. If the malware can detect the signature of MBAM,
it may still stop it. MBAM is an excellent program, *if*
it can be made to run. The malware knows that, which is
why it puts up a fight. If MBAM runs, chances are you
won't need this second idea.

You can also use the Kaspersky Rescue CD which has a virus scanner on it.
The difference with this, is it boots in place of your OS, and runs
a scan while Windows isn't operating. That prevents the malware from
fighting back.

http://support.kaspersky.com/faq/?qid=208282173

When you click the link on that page, the download should start immediately.
The last time I downloaded it, it was 210,106,368 bytes. That's
OK over broadband, but would take a long time on dialup (10 hours???).
The CD you prepare, ends up with a miniature copy of the
Gentoo operating system, plus the Kaspersky scanner.

When you finish the download, you need a program that knows
how to convert an ISO9660 into a bootable CD. Nero can
do that, or the free Imgburn can do it as well. You can't
just "drag and drop" that in Windows, as it is not sufficient
to just "copy" the file to the CD. The file is an "image" of
a CD, rather than being just a "file" as such.

Hi

Sorry for the lack of info, I wrote the post at work and did not have the
details to hand.

Amongst the redirections I get are:

http://www.wildcupid.com/ext.php?dy...=hot&ext_cp=0000007330_29181_*_win+7+problems

http://ad.marketwithmogul.com/ta/kw.php?id=38

http://ratedtoday.com/?wpx=uk&sourc...049e1b&display=subject&searchname=antispyware

Avast doesn't come up all the time, b ut sometimes it will say it's a
malicious site. Can't seem to find any logs on exaxct saying sorry.

Perhaps a bootable rescue disc with Malware bytes would work.

I forget the name of such discs, but some are freely available for
download & burning - but the OP should do it on a clean computer. Many
of these things enable one to add software to them, if not already
present.

OK, here's one from my browser favorites:
Bart's Preinstalled Environment (BartPE) /DVD
http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/

If that's not what the OP wants he can search for terms like "bootable
live windows CD" and maybe come up with others.
