Question about Win7 SP1 backup.

Is there an automatic way to arrange an overflow
in the backup destination, so that older backups
are deleted as new ones fill up the external HDD?

Windows help says:

***
Click Manage space. If you are prompted for an
administrator password or confirmation, type the
password or provide confirmation.

Note
If you haven't set up backup, you won't see Manage
space.

To delete older file backups, under Data file
backup, click View backups.

You can then select the file backups that you want
to delete, which will free up disk space. Deleting
an entry in the list will not have an impact on
other backups. If you think that you don't need a
version of your files from a certain backup
period, you can delete that backup. We recommend
that you always keep the most recent backup.

To change the amount of space that is used by
system image backups, under System image, click
Change settings.

You can then choose to have Windows save older
system image backups or just the most recent
system image backup.

***

I can't get any sense out of the last sentence
above......where are these settings??

This is my take on MS's sentence.
"You can then choose to have Windows save older
system image backups" [as well as the most recent] "or just the most
recent system image backup."

The settings only appear once you've enabled backup.

Thanks, I've chosen the option to backup the
library and a system image together, to allow
easier recovery of just a few files without
restoring the whole computer.

In the "Manage Windows Backup Disk Space" window,
I have selected the "Retain only the most recent
system image" option, but I ask does this apply to
the concurrent library files backup too? The
window refers only to the "image".

With the "View Backups" button I can see the
latest Library files backup, and it seems to
suggest that this must be manually deleted. Is
this so?

Dunno. I don't use the backup beyond taking a system image every few
weeks. I keep it on an external HD, and before taking it I put the
previous one in a folder appropriately named "Old System Images".

I also take a full archive with Paragon Backup at the same time. Belt &
braces approach. I'm currently trying to decide which one of the two to
drop.

That sounds as if you're choosing between keeping all backups, or just
the most recent. (I think I've seen that choice before somewhere: I
think it might have been in XP, over System Restore Points.)

Peter's initial desire - which I interpret as meaning keep all backups
until the backup medium runs out of space, then ditch the oldest one (or
two if necessary), automatically, when another backup is invoked - does
not seem to be matched by either of those options.

I have been testing further by repeatedly backing
up on to an external HDD and as I do additional
messages appear before a new backup... vis:

1/ EFS certificates are not included in this
backup.

2/ A system repair disk may be required to restore
a system image.

3/ Any system image may be overwritten in this
backup.

I assume 1 & 2 are there because of 3.

2 is normal. You boot with a Repair Disk, choose restore from image, it
finds them, bingo.
1 I don't have on my Win7 HP. This might help;
http://tinyurl.com/c28ww74
3 is a bit worrying. It seems to be size-related; ie if there's enough
space on the disk it'll use that, if not it will erase the oldest image
and use that space.
That would give me concern unless the disk already contained several
generations of images, in which case I'd rest easy knowing that nothing
but Win Backup would start erasing them.
