Several possible reasons.......
1. Make sure your computer is virus free. Run your anti-virus program and do a full scan.
Recommend using Malwarebytes (free edition ). It`s the best in the business.

2. Your disk is fragmented over time and all the `bits & pieces` are all over the disk. Defragment will put them in proper places, hence improve performance
Recommend using Auslogics disk defrag ( select the free edition )

3. Do a disk cleanup to get rid of all the unnecessary items such as temp files etc.
Recommend using CCleaner. It is effective and widely used.
Pick the free version.

4. You may have too many programs in the Start Up list. That will require extra time to load them, hence slow opening.
You have to decide what to keep and what to remove from the list.
Some will suggest autorun.
I have no idea what to do with the list, so I cannot elaborate further.

Good luck.

To elaborate on david's #4...
When you install software many programs add programs or services into your startup and it takes time to load each of these processes.

If you load autoruns and look at the Logon Tab you will see most of the startup programs. Many things can probably be deleted to speed up your computer but some are needed. Automatic update programs for Adobe, Google, Firefox, HP Printers etc are among the items that can be removed. Always research any item before you disable it and especially make sure it is not part of your anti-virus software which helps protect your computer. And of course if you stop any update programs then you have to take the responsibility to manually check for updates periodically.

First we need to know what hardware your computer has.
  1. Download hwInfo and run it.
  2. Click on "Save Report"
  3. Make sure the Export Format is HTML
  4. Click "Browse" and select your "Desktop"
  5. Give the file a name like MyComputer or your Forum username.
  6. Click on Save
  7. Click on "Next".
  8. Click on "Finish"
  9. Put the newly created MyComputer.html (Or what ever you decided to call it) in to a zip file and upload it to the forum.

AutoRuns

  1. Download autoruns from HERE
  2. unzip it to your Desktop
  3. Right click on autoruns.exe and select "Run as Administrator"
  4. Accept the EULA (End user license Agreement )
  5. Wait until it has finished scanning (it will say "Ready" in the bottom left of Autoruns)
  6. File -> Save
  7. Choose a directory to save the file and name it something like mypc.arn (please make sure that it is a .arn type of file.)
  8. Put the file in a zip file.
  9. Post the zip file to the forum.

I have downloaded/unzipped the 'autoruns' file. The file containing 'disabling and deleting entries' fails to respond to any keystrokes/clicks.

I believe I have too many programs in autoruns but have been unable to determine how to remove the less needed ones.

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanx.
