Newsgroup readers

On this Win7, I'm using T-Bird for mail and Vista's Windows Mail for news.
The main thing I don't like about T-Bird for news is that I can't delete
threads en masse from my computer. The main reason I don't like "real"
news readers is that I have yet to find one that will poll for new posts
automatically like polling for e-mail.

First, you need access to a Vista machine.

On the Win7 machine, find the "Windows Mail" folder in Program Files.
Rename it to "OldWindows Mail" as a precaution.

Using a Flash or CD, copy the "Windows Mail" folder in its entirety from
the Vista machine.

Go back to the Win7 machine and copy the "Windows Mail" from the Flash or
CD to a location in Program Files.

Open it and right click on the WinMail.exe file and send a shortcut to the
Desktop. Done.

I've been using TB for years. Now it's up to 15. Please tell me what
you mean by "memory leak".
A memory leak means the program uses more and more memory, the longer
you use it in a session. Programs should request (allocate) memory as
they need it, and then release memory when they no longer need it.
That cycle can occur hundreds or even thousands of times during a
single session. A memory leak is when the program keeps asking for
more memory but never releases any back to the system. (Simplified)
I understand that TB is on its way out, at least from a new feature
point of view. Too bad as I also use it as a mail client.
No, not on its way out. It's more so that it already does everything
that its developers want it to do.

Thanks, I'll give those a try.
I've given Gravity a quick try, and it seems OK. However, it doesn't do
mail, so I decided to concentrate on playing with Thunderbird
as a possible alternative mail/news client.

It's still the best one outside Thunderbird. Why does it matter if it's
no longer supported if it does everything already? If you want want
that's still alive, probably Forte Agent is the best one - but you have
to pay for it these days.

Ah, I hadn't spotted that 'feature'. I think you're right (although I
can't say that it's been any great inconvenience). Maybe there's a tweak
in the configuration file (like the one you inexplicably need to do to
be able to delete an opened news post)?

You're pulling his leg now, are you not? Surely you're not suggesting he
should use the worst, most broken mail program in existence, even
included the dreaded OE?

I'm not pulling his leg. I have been using it in Win7 for news since
November, 2009 with no issues.

IMO, the worst, most broken mail program in existence is Windows Live
Mail. That sucks big time.

Same here, version 2.0.0.24 on winxp... runs all day for me. I'd
change but I'm so damned tired of learning curves just to do what I've
been doing...

MesNews does. Set whatever time you like to check for new posts from 1
minute upwards.

Too old, as the website no longer exists. Thanks anyways.
Nevertheless, it is one of the best newsreaders ever released, and until
there are major changes to Usenet (like that will ever happen), it
warrants your attention.

Get it here: <http://dialog.datalist.org/>

Install the 2.0.15.1 version, then immediately update it to the .41
version.

That's why everyone recommends their favorite- there are no saints here :)

I don't exactly recommend my favorite, Here's part of my standard post
on the subject:

"Some people will tell you to use Windows Live Mail; others will tell
you to use Thunderbird; still others may have other recommendations.

My advice is to ignore all such recommendations. I personally use
Microsoft Outlook for e-mail and Forté Agent for newsgroups, but you
should try several and choose what *you* like best, rather than make
your decision based on what I, or anyone else, likes best (or even
what Microsoft suggests)."

I used T'Burp for email for some time and liked it, it was not a good
newsreader for a whole bunch of reasons.

I like Xnews, it's very compact and VERY configureable.

Get it here: http://xnews.newsguy.com/

Get the "latest" version and install it in it's OWN directory or
partition, do NOT use the default.

Next, download the "Test" version which is the latest version and just
drop the executable in your Xnews directory.

Why? http://twovoyagers.com/blinkynet.net/comp/xnewsrels.html

All the help you'll ever need is at news.software.readers, I found it
usable 'out of the box' but it became perfect for me after asking a few
questions about configuration.

I think you'll like it!
