Location of icon for files

I make icons for Desktop files and place them in a folder in 'My Pictures' folder. When I reboot I lose the icons on my Desktop I make but not the icons I use from the Windows 7 folder of icons.
Is it possible to add my icons to the Windows 7 folder of icons? Then they would function like the Window 7 icons.

Or does anyone know how to make 'homemade' icons permanent?

Wally, could you try rebuilding the icon cache and see if your problem still occurs?
