This is showing up as critical repeatedly in my event viewer but I have no idea what it means. My laptop keeps powering off by itself and I am assuming it has something to do with this can someone help me out?

I am new to the forum why is it showing up solved when I have not resolved anything. Is this a download from windows that needs to be done?

One of the mods or admins will have to check into the solved issue for you....but you could check from your end, up in the right corner in thread tools, see if anything is there for you to mark or uncheck the solved.

Now to your problem. Can you post a screen shot of your event viewer showing the error id...that would help alot.

Kernel-Power id 41

I am re-posting because somehow it ended up showing solved and it is not solved. My dell laptop running Windows 7 is powering itself down on a regular basis. In my event viewer Kernel-Power id 41 is showing up as critical. Can someone advise me as to what the issue may be. I am thinking it is a software issue and not a hardware issue but I really don't know.
Help!

MOD NOTE: Simply use the thread tools to mark it "not solved" please do not start a new thread on the same issue.

Kernel-Power id 41

I am having issues with my Dell Studio laptop randomly shutting down and found this Kernel-Power id 41 message in my event viewer says critical. Would this issue be causing my laptop to power down on its own.
Help!

I have merged all your posts into one thread and it is not showing as solved but you have control of the "solved" setting with thread tools. Please do NOT continue to start new threads on the same issue.

I would check your control panel > power options and maybe try one for higher performance.

You could also check device manager for devices with power management tabs and set important ones, like your network interface controller to never sleep.

Also make sure you are up-to-date on windows updates, running SP1, etc.

And in safe mode (without networking) it's a good idea to run a complete virus scan.

I have all the current updates for Windows 7 professional completed. I have checked my power management made a couple minor adjustments but these settings have not changed since I bought the system in 2008.

The message says it is being limited by firmware. By any chance have you done a BIOS update?

I know from experience that the Phenom II:X4 had an issue that would rarely happen but to solve it they throttled the whole processor down and so for a very rare error you were better off NOT getting the BIOS update for that CPU. I'm thinking this may be a similar situation.

It could also be normal, EIST may be enabled in your BIOS settings. See J W Stuart's answer HERE.

I don't know what a BIOS update is ( I am sure you are thrilled to find someone not so computer savvy ) or where I find those settings.

Well if you don't know what a BIOS update is, then you probably didn't do one.

Your BIOS is the set of instructions your computer goes through every time it boots up. To access the BIOS settings you hit a special key when your machine boots. this key varies by manufacturer but is usually like F1, F2, F10, F12, DELete, or ESCape.

However it does not sound likely you changed that either.

So you've had your computer for 4 years, how long have you been having this issue?

Also did you do the virus scan I suggested? I always like to try and rule out a virus.

I have been having this issue for probably a couple months it just started getting worse where it powers down more frequently. I run Norton 360 on. So if I want to run the virus scan in safe how would I do that?

To access safe made, reboot your computer. When you see "starting windows" press F8. Choose safe mode (without networking support). Once in there say no to system restore if it offers ... you want to continue with safe mode. Then find and run Norton from your start menu items.

If you want to perform an even better malware scan, before you reboot, download TDSSKiller and RKill and then, run both of those once in safe mode, in that order, and then run your Norton (links to TDSSKiller and RKill can be found in our Freeware DB at the bottom under virus removal).

According to the Dell site your computer shipped with Vista and they list no support for W7 which I find odd (normally at least one extra OS version is supported) ... although most everything from Vista is W7 compatible so that isn't necessarily an issue, I just find it odd.

How long ago did you upgrade to W7? Have you had the problems ever since?

It also says there is a BIOS update from Dec 2008 which you should probably download and run. 1735_A05.EXE.

Well I was running my norton in safe mode and was doing fine but now it seems hung-up on item 11,715. It has not moved off that item for several hours now, so I am thinking I should stop the scan?
