The chances of damaging an open file are small (a USB drive will
normally have write-cacheing disabled - see properties) but if you've
left a file open inadvertantly you could be unlucky. Depending on the
circumstances I simply yank it and accept the risk, or log off first.
If you want to go into it, you could use Process Explorer (from
Microsoft's Sysinternals.com site) and use the search facility to
identify the open handles.
