I have lots of icons on my desktop for quicker access than wading through the start menus to find a particular program I wish to use at the moment. But because I tend to work with lots of windows open at one time, the icons tend to be obscured when I need a new program. So I pin a lot of icons to the taskbar for my most popular programs so they are always readily visible. This gives me quicker access to these programs. Of course, creating a single-key shortcut to a program's icon gets me there fastest, but I was wondering if there is a detrimental cost in time or cpu cycles or memory to having lots of pinned icons on the taskbar all of the time? Am I slowing my computer down noticeably?

No, they are links not running processes.

There is no difference in having the shortcut on Desktop vs Taskbar or pinned to Start Menu.
