This seems like a unlikely problem.
I wish to have my files within a folder listed in alphabetical order.
There are no specific instructions in Windows 7 as to how to do this.

The problem may be that my computer is 5 years old, and that I am an average computer user.

I have been told on other websites that this computer, HP Pavilion a4310f, is beyond its expected life.
I cannot afford to buy a new computer at this time.

Any input would be appreciated at this time.

When you open Windows Explorer to see the file list, simply click in the column title line on the field you wish to sort by (in your case it would be Name)

Note: if you click it again then it sorts reverse alphabetical
Note 2: folders will always be first, then files - cannot change that
Note 3: each different library type remembers specific settings so even if you sort by name in Documents you can still sort, for example, Music by artist or one of the other fields
