File compare software

Bob Hatch

I'm helping a friend with a computer that the "Geek Squad" screwed up.
One of the things they managed to do was duplicate a high number of
files and we need to search his drive and eliminate as many as possible.

I've done some web searches and there are a bunch of programs out there
that all claim to be the best since sliced bread became available. :)

Any suggestions from folks who have used any of the programs.

TIA.
Bob

Instead of that, I strongly suggest making a full backup and
reinstalling Windows by whatever method is available, and then
importing his personal data. The approach you're taking is going to be
cumbersome, error prone, time consuming, and a host of other bad
adjectives.

The tech managed to duplicate 100's of his .doc, .txt, .jpg and other
files. It doesn't make sense to do what you're suggesting and then to
import the problem.

What I'm really looking for is a "duplicate file finder", and I've found
one that works well.

Thanks.

OK, gotcha. I was thinking they had duplicated hundreds of Windows OS
files. Knowing they were his personal files changes things somewhat.
I'm glad you found something that works for you.

All Geek Squad "techs" should be required to finish high school before
being hired. :)

The major mistake your friend made was using the Geek Squad at all. I
know of several different people whose computers they either couldn't
repair or totally trashed.

When I asked about a job with them and asked about training from them I
was told there was none! So the quality of any help you get from them
is going to depend on how good the person doing the work is.

Although there's some truth in what you say, you should bear in mind
that they, and all the other big box stores, pay their people very
little. So the only people who will take a job with them are those who
know so little that they can't get a better job elsewhere.
