cut and paste problem

i have win 7 ultimate x64 on a toshiba satellite pro a200, i cannot left click left hold and drag over text
i can get the cursor where i want it, but text does not highlight, i put in a usb mouse and it worked
but that defeats the object, its synoptic, all driver are up to date as well, as i did a fresh install of win 7
i also cannot move any icon on desktop, can cut and paste things txt docs apps to different locations though, is it a hardware problem

The issue may be the "mouse" settings. Touch pads have extra things such as tap and double-tap that are not normal to a physical mouse and may be interfering with your drag. Play with the settings.
