Can't remove icons

Today I tried to delete a couple of items from the desktop, using the
tried-and-true right click-delete method, but it didn't work. The only
thing I've done intentionally since it last worked was to download last
week's updates. Anyone else have this problem?

Thanks for the reply, Dave. It turns out that the problem that the
drop-down menus have turned into wheedle-coax-threaten-down menus with
no indication to that effect. I don't know if this is an option that
have accidentally changed or if was some MS person's idea of an
"improvement". Whichever, I want the drop-downs back.

I have no idea what "wheedle-coax-threaten-down menus" means, but I
could easily suspect that malware has entered his computer.
