I have a Samsung R540. I have been experiencing problems with it so decided to do a restore to factory settings. I then installed AVG and then tried to run a backup. It failed and advised that I run chkdsk /R. I scheduled that to run.

When I rebooted the system it ran through until it got to CHKDSK is verifying file data (stage 4 of 5)...

It then stops when it reaches 12 percent complete. (56812 of 127216 files processed.

I have a system Repair disc Windows 7 64 bit and I have some backups from a while back but suspect if I tried to restore from them I would still have the same issue. I don't have anything of any importance on the portable but just want to get it back up and running.

Any advice

It sounds like you will need to replace the HD in it. Make sure you have the W7 license key because you will need it to reinstall on the new hard drive.
