Can I install any 32 bit version Software in my 64 bit system?

Hi Ian,

As per your reply to bmicek3 we can run any 32 bit software on 64 bit versions.

I am using Windows 7 professional which is a 64 bit version OS, this is just to verify again the thing you mentioned in your reply. Can I install any 32 bit version Software in my 64 bit system? and if so what is the different between installing 32 bit SW & 64 bit SW in a 64 bit OS?

Can you kindly explain me the difference please! Will it create any issue (a minimal issue even) if used 32 bit SW in 63 bit OS.

Basically speaking, you can run almost all 32 bit software on Windows 7 64-bit without any noticeable difference. The main problem is when you try to use 32 bit drivers or software that needs to interface/wrap with x64 compiled software.

I don't think you will have any issue running 32 bit apps in Windows 7 x64, but there are a handful of exceptions. Most things should run fine

Alternatively, if you have a specific app that you are worried about, let us know and someone here may be able to shed some light on it.

Thanks a lot and appreciate your quick response.

Actually I need to install Java into my new machine with 64 bit OS I'm confused if I used 32 bit version will it generate any exception. But according to your answer I think that is ok.

Just need to know one final thing about this. Is it advisable to install the 64 bit Java (JDK) version than installing the 32 bit version in Windows 7 Professional.

Since I'm new to 64 bit versions I'm this much worried in going for them.

You can install Java 32 bit on the x64 system. It is used in the 32 bit browsers like IE8, Firefox and Chrome.

If you decide to use the IE8 64 bit browser, then you'll need the Java 64 bit install also for Java applications on that browser.

That's strange that you're getting an error message. AVG Free is compatible with both 32 bit and 64 bit systems.

What is the error message that you're getting? That will help.

Generally if it wouldn't run in Vista then it isn't likely to work in W7. Did that product work in 32bit Vista? If it works in 32bit but not in 64bit then it is likely 16bit software. Just like now 32bit will generally run in 64, the old 16 would run in 32. I'm not familiar with that product but I found a Filemaker Pro that is on version 11.0; if this is the same product then the newer version is listed as 64-bit compatible and it may be time for you to upgrade.

OR, you may however be able to use it in an XP Virtual Window if you have that installed...
