Assign a key shortcut.

I'm sure that I used to be able to do this but, if so, I've lost the
note. Is there a free program to record a series of keystrokes and
assign them to a single key? I guess I'd better say that I am using W7
Home Premium.

Thanks in advance.

Although I'm not advocating against free software to perform certain tasks,
it's also a good thing knowing how to do your own scripting.
