Address Book

P

Panic

I use Win 7 Home Premium SP1 64 bit. I have had a basic address book
program that has somehow disappeared from my computer. Yesterday I went to
a couple sites that offered free address book programs but they downloaded
and installed (without my specific approval) several other programs I don't
want. I went into Control Panel and deleted each piece of crap installed on
that day. Does anyone here know of a decent address book software program I
can install on my computer? Thanks!

You could install Thunderbird and use only its address book.

It works OK for me (although I also use its e-mail program).

I suggest TB only because it's the one I know about...

I also use the G-Mail address book, but I don't know of a way to install
a local version of it on a Windows PC...perhaps only because I haven't
looked.

Not sure exactly what you want but I use the free portable version of
EssentailPIM for a lot of things. Do not know if it will work with
64bit.

If you can use MS Access, build your own,I did, well I downloaded one
then used what I wanted, so I cheated a bit really.

I have used Time & Chaos for many years and it works on my Win7 HP
SP1. They now have a free version of Chaos.

Dunno if it's "Decent" and it lives in the cloud and not on one's
computer... but I recently threw in the towel and went over to Google's
"Contacts". Set up a gMail account, click the "Gmail" dropdown in the
upper right of the screen, and select "Contacts".

Obvious down side is that one's address book is exposed to whoever can
hack Google.

Upside is that it nicely synchs across devices: PC, smart phones,
tablets, and so-forth. On my Android tablet, a copy of the address
book actually lives on the device.

I should have been more specific. I'm asking for a snail mail type address
book, not an internet address book.

It's no longer on my computer and it being 10+ years old I don't recall the
name of the program. Snail mail address book.

If you have Word or Excel installed, you can download templates for
different types of address books/lists. Go to File > New... and type address
book in the search box.

The templates are customizable, if there's a field it's missing, or ones you
want to delete.

I use Essential PIM, and keep the data file in Dropbox.

Have you got Microsoft Word, or any word-processing program? That's
what I use. I took a few minutes to define about four styles. I
print it every so often, using the "bookley" mode of my printer.

Are you sure it is not just the icon for launching the program that has
disappeared. Seems odd that the program has deleted itself.

You might be interested in a problem I've noticed with your newsreader.
It seems to chop off the persons name to whom you are replying.
You are replying to Panic yet my name is at the top as though you are
replying to me.
I've noticed this odd behaviour on several of your posts in the past.

Thanks for pointing that out Dave.

A quick look infers it is a problem when replying to people using
windows live mail as live mail does not quote properly, it is really
meant for email and not newsgroups.

Your reply to Panic where you wrote "Why cant you re-install the
program that 'disappeared' ?" then shows in Panic's reply without quote
marks. Panic adds the text "It's no longer on my computer and it being
10+ years old I don't recall the name of the program. Snail mail
address book". Which looks as though YOU had written Panic's reply!

I am sure that is what I see, but I will look closer at other posts I
have made in other newsgroups later.
