Thanks, I had forgotten about that and I'll try and report back. Also
the Rules don't seem to be working and those mailings are just turning
up in the normal inbox. I did a system restore to no avail.

All this seemed to be caused by some event yesterday night. In the
"Events Viewer" in computer management there was:

2/ Windows Log "Applications" gave

Could the problem be caused by power outages?
Maybe the Microsoft Office forum or non-Microsoft newsgroups dedicated
to the same might have more knowledgeable people available.

Outlook doesn't HAVE a separate address book. All your Outlook data is
in your pst file...
Sure it does, two as a matter of fact.

The Global Address Book (only accessible when On-Line)
and the Personal Address Book, do a search for *.pab, it will be on your
profile folder.

G

Gordon

I have restored the pst file, but still no address book. But I found
the address data is in the User/Peter/Contacts folder. How do I get
this back into the pst file?
How did you "restore" the pst file and what do you mean by "address book"?
The only thing in Outlook called "address book" is a particular VIEW of
your CONTACTS folder.

Gordon

Wrong.
The Gobal Address Book only appears in an Exchange environment, and
Outlook hasn't used a PAB since (I think) Office 2000 - that's FOUR
versions ago...

Isn't there an import function in Outlook?
I worry that I will wreck all the data if I try this. Luckily I can
send emails directly from the "User/Peter/Contacts" folder, so this
will do for now. I've ordered some Outlook10 eBooks.

V

Vic RR Garcia

Wrong.
The Gobal Address Book only appears in an Exchange environment,
Correct, as I said, On-line, if you are NOT connected to an Exchange
server, why are you using Outlook at all ???

and

Nyet, we use Office 2003 currently, still those files are there and in
use; now, it's not created by default, unless you configure Outlook for
off-line use.

If 2007 or 2010 had change that, then maybe, I have not played with
those since we do not use them.

Are you saying Outlook should only be used with an Exchange server? I
sure hope not.

Pretty much, yes, as a standalone mail client, Outlook is not that good.
Plenty of other programs are better, now, connected to Exchange, as a
Corporate mail gateway, it's about the best solution available.

My idea is: Always use the best tool available for the job.

Thanks for clarifying. Now I'm sure that we disagree.

Err because many people use it as a stand-alone PIM with POP or IMAP or
Hotmail accounts. Why do you suppose that you should ONLY use Outlook on
an Exchange Server environment?

I expect you'll find that the PAB is a relic of a previous version and
is NOT in fact being used. The fact that the file is there doesn't mean
it's actually in use. AFAIK from Outlook 2002 the Contacts folder is
used by Outlook, NOT a PAB.

Each to his own, of course, but for the benefit of others here, we
don't all agree with you. I like Outlook very much.

You should use the best tool available for how you work--essentially
what you like the best and what meets your needs the best. Some of us
may find some feature important, but others never use that feature and
don't care how well a particular program implements it; that's one of
the reasons different people have different views. You and I clearly
have different views as to what's the best tool for e-mail.
