1500 MB download

C

Recently I downloaded something the details of which are fuzzy to me. It
was towards dawn and I was very drowsy. I downloaded this thing from
Microsoft which was absolutely massive --around 1500 MB. I remember I
was interested in backups as well as installing an additional OS on my
Win7 machine at the time. Unfortunately I had to be away right the next
day for several weeks and now I can't clearly remember the details or
what I was doing at the time. What could this thing be that was so massive?

Since then when I switch on my Win7 computer, it gives me the option to
choose the OS; whether to start Win7 OR whether to do a Macrium Reflect
System Recovery. I had installed the paid 64 bit Professional version of
Macrium Reflect not long before this massive download, whatever it was,
from Microsoft. Anybody out there who knows as to what this massive
download could have been?

After I wrote the above, I slept on it. I vaguely remember that I was
planning on installing WinXP on my Win7 machine. Could it have been MS
software to prepare my Win7 machine for installing a second OS, which I
suspect it is.

Anybody out there who can throw light on this? After all it is not every
day that one downloads 1.5 GB files to install on one's computer. --

Not sure what it might be; XP Mode is only 500MB.
If you right-click on the file and pick Properties, what does it say (unless
it's and MSI file, in which case it'll probably say "installer").

I think even with my old age semi-senility, I'd still remember what such a
huge file would be. (Maybe not, but I'd like to *think* I would, LOL!)

You were probably trying to create a bootable CD Rescue Media. In
Macrium Reflect > Other Tasks > Create Rescue Media

As you can see in the following window: "Requires an initial 1.7GB
download from Microsoft."

You can find this download at m$.com:
<https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5753>

It's named KB3AIK_EN.iso and should be located in your default Downloads
folder.

As for the booting option, I'm pretty sure you can change this through:

Start > Run > msconfig > Boot

You can set W7 as default OS and possibly delete the Macrium option.

If this doesn't help, then maybe you should as for help in the Macrium

Win7 has a Downloads folder in your user name's folder. If you downloaded
and then installed it should be there. I am not sure if it goes there if
you just clicked Run.

Also, if you check in the Control Panel | Uninstall A Program, you can
click Installed On in the Column Header bar and it will sort your programs
by the date installed.

It could be the Win 7 SP1 update download for 32 and 64 bit versions.
That was about that size.

The SP1 downloads, the closest is the one at 1.9GB.

I like s|b's answer, that Choro was downloading WAIK kit. Macrium has
a small Linux ISO, built into the Macrium download, which you can use.
Using the WAIK method is so you can do the same thing, but end up
with a Microsoft based solution for booting instead.

(One of many versions of WAIK)
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5753

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macrium_Reflect

"System Recovery

...the PC has to be started with another operating system
using a Live CD. There are typically three ways to do this:
"

1) Linux Kernel (one is provided inside the Macrium download)

2) WinPE (Microsoft) or BartPE (if Macrium has a plugin for it)

3) WAIK (Microsoft). "The disadvantage of using this method is
that it requires a 1.7GB download from Microsoft."

And the timing of Choro's sleepy experience, makes WAIK a good fit.

Macrium Reflect > Other Tasks > Create Rescue Media

As you can see in the following window: "Requires an initial 1.7GB

BRAVO! That's one of the things I did around that time. BRILLIANT!
I must look into this again when I am feeling normal. Right now I am
beginning to feel sleepy...

In fact I just did. Got "Everything" up and it found the "KB3AIK_EN.iso"
file that you mention, including the backup copy that xxcopy has copied
to the external HD. And it *is* 1.7 GB as you say. And what is more, I
remember that when I tried downloading that massive file first time, my
ISP sort of died on me as it seems to do around that time of the night,
with the result that I have got the file showing twice -- the first
effort the download being 0 KB! Nasty that especially when I had already
downloaded around 96% of the file. It just got stuck there, the damn
thing! I could see from the cable modem that all communication had come
to an absolute standstill. I remember cursing my ISP!

Incidentally, I've got updates to install for my Macrium Reflect which
will require a new Bootable CD, or so it said!. Must remember that! Put
the first MR Bootable CD with my Win7 installation disk. Nice and tidy.
Hope I can remember where to find them IF ever I need them. ;-) Must be
getting old. I think I am fast becoming a relic! Not quite reached a
century yet but not all that far off that magic figure!

I would have thought the Macrium option is there in case Windows fails
to start.

My thanks to everybody. You've all been so understanding and helpful,
particularly the chap with the snide remarks about me being fuzzy which
I admit I fully earned. ;-)

BTW, he'd do well to Google for "fuzzy logic" which my old classmate the
professor emeritus, who I call "the fuzzy logician", used in his work.
And though he wasn't the originator of fuzzy logic in computing, he
cottoned onto it fairly soon.

sheesh

I don't help people who are either trolling or just too lazy to even think.

Ok, thought for sure you were trolling...
my remark was meant more for it's humor content than malice.

Not every day, but not unheard of either. Windows 8 (x64) RTM is 3.416
GB.

Just do a search for .iso files, bet you find the download that way.

I've been wondering, doesn't W7's search have an "over x size" option? I
can't imagine you have _too_ many files over 1G (that you can't
identify, anyway; movies should be obvious). So I'd have thought that
was the first thing to do.

(Unless you'd found it but still couldn't remember what it was, of
course.)

[Anyway, I know you've sorted it.]

There is a web page somewhere, with the search syntax for the search engine.
I can't find the one I was looking at earlier.

Unlike WinXP search, there's no convenient menus for such options. So
you have to type in options with the item you're searching for.

At the time, I joked you'd need to print off that stupid web page, and
keep it pasted to the side of the monitor, permanently. A menu would
prevent such an unsightly mess.

Example of some search options...
