As Davehc mentioned in an earlier post, I have mine set to notify me, and I install the updates at the time I choose.
TM, KB976902 is the required update for SP1 to install. It's well documented on the net. I had to install that very same update in order to install SP1 beta, on both Win 7 OS's that I installed it on.
It's the setup, SP1 is on the way. But you're right about the piracy issue, if your system isn't "genuine", you can't install SP1 (or the RC), and most likely, you'll end up with a black screen.
But if anyone has SP1 RC installed, be looking to remove it soon, as you can't get the real deal until it is uninstalled.
