Win7 SP1. Hacking a thumb drive?

Is there any software around to scramble the IDs
of thumb drives? Is this hardwired into them?

If you mean the model number string or serial number, then (a) yes it is
[in most cases - there might be some that don't have a serial number],
and (b) I don't know if there's anything that scrambles it - almost
certainly not, since it is hard coded, so any such software would have
no effect when the drive is put into another computer.

If you mean the string like "Jim's thumb", then you can change that just
as you can with any drive "label".

I'm sometimes a bit bewildered by that, really - there are no young people in
it, there's no sex, there's no violence, no car chases and there's no action
and no vampires. - Colin Firth on the success of the film "The King's Speech".
