When I start task manager (ctrl alt delete) all I get is a cpu usage
pane pop up and no way of getting rid or seeing what I expect to see....
any ideas.

Thanks

Click on the Processes tab. And then try others.

There is nothing to click. It is just a blank pane showing the cpu
usage. The first thing I tried (sounds daft) but was to start task
manager again to be able to close the pane but has no effect. Seems I
can get rid of it by right click the taskbar icon and "close window"

Solved. Double clicking the grey borders of the pane brings everything back.

If you had looked in Help you might have found this:

"Task Manager has two different views. To see the view that includes
menus and tabs, double-click the border of the Task Manager window. To
switch back to the view without menus and tabs, double-click anywhere in
the border around the tabs."

You might have to click in a couple of areas near the top before you
find the right one.

In Windows Help, I searched for "hide task manager menu bar" and I
clicked on "Using Task Manager: frequently asked questions". The answer
was in there somewhere.

Nice one!
I've managed to reproduce it here.
Select Performance tab, double click grey area.
To get back, as you say.

Just goes to show that even features that have been around forever
need to be mentioned now and then, lest people forget about them.

Yep.

I once knew about it, but all I could remember today was that there was
*something* that stripped the panel to bare essentials.

I searched Help because I /had/ to :)
