SendTo Problem - Only When Sending From Desktop

Excellent videos! Thanks for doing that. Perhaps now the collective
group wisdom will kick in and someone will recognize what's causing
your icons to move around.

Besides FastStone Capture, what else have you installed?

Do the icons move if you Send To something other than Next Backup?
(What is Next Backup?) What is supposed to happen when you send things
to Next Backup? Do they get staged somewhere?
Next Backup is simply a folder on another drive where I collect things
to be put on a CD or DVD for long term backup once there is enough to
fill a disc. I do that manually with a burning app. This folder is
nothing special.

Icons DO move if I SendTo a USB flash drive.

Icons DO NOT move if I SendTo "Documents" which I think is a system
folder of a special type.

If you really need a list of programs, that's more than I have time
for now. Keep in mind that these posts are being sent from another
(XP) computer. I don't have my news reader set up on the new Win 7
machine yet.

I'll check in again tomorrow.

It's possible in one case, files are *moved* on the same partition.
In the other case, files are *copied* to another folder, and the
copy has a new creation date or something. Since the files are
new, the icon positioning software is triggered (new icons need
to be placed somewhere, and there's a standard grid for that).

The other place to look, is at "desktop.ini" file if present. It
contains information about how to display things. It's not present
in all folders. It would be present in any folder the OS design
considers to need a custom view. There's a call in there to some
shell routine, with a 16 bit number (in decimal), which indicates
which "flavor" of information display is desired. Perhaps something
there is playing a part. (No desktop.ini to having a desktop.ini present.
Or, the contents of desktop.ini are changed. Or, the date on
the desktop.ini file is changing.)

Purely some guesses,

Paul

I don't have much to go on so I was formulating a hypothesis that the
jumpy icons are caused by something that you've installed and that the
rest of us haven't installed. Perhaps a favorite little app or utility
that you can't live without and have been bringing with you as you've
upgraded over the years?

No files are being moved, as far as I can see.

Why and how would copying something cause the desktop position of the
source file to change?

I'm guessing you didn't check out his youtube videos, linked above.

My gut says desktop.ini isn't a player here, but I'm like you - still
in the guessing stage.

I get the same behaviour that you see, ( copying shortcuts to a Blank usb drive E ).
At first I thought having a desktop wallpaper image may have something to do
with it, but it's the same with a solid colour desktop:

Like the others, I see the same behavior.

This the experiment I just did:

I created a new item on my Desktop and created a folder (called,
cleverly enough, New folder). I dropped a shortcut to that folder into
Send To.

When I sent the test item to New folder, the test item's icon jumped. I
did it again and it didn't jump. That was true whether I sent it to copy
and replace, or to copy and not replace, the item in New folder.

If it's any consolation the same thing happens with Windows 8 Pro RTM.
I have 'Move to folder..' and 'Copy to folder..' context extensions in
Explorer and using the 'Copy to folder..' seems to work ok, so maybe it's
something to do with the Send To command.
If you want to try it as a work-around here's the install reg file
and the uninstall reg file:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

;Move To command
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AllFilesystemObjects\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AllFilesystemObjects\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\{C2FBB631-2971-11D1-A18C-00C04FD75D13}]

Thanks. I saw this on the web yesterday as I was looking to see if
anyone else has the problem. I'll try these if I can't come up with a
solution to the Send To.

When using Copy To, how do you find the destination folder? Is there
a Copy To folder somewhere where you create Shortcuts to your
destination folder?

Thanks.

A box pops up and you browse to your desired folder.

Brain surgery maybe?
For a while, I was a Electronics trade teacher and used to try to
inspire my students with the story that, as far as I knew, the "pass
mark" for a Brain Surgeon was 98% and then ask the students "If you had
a brain tumor, would you prefer to go to a Brain Surgeon that achieved
98% in their final exam, or one that got 99% or 100%"

I'd rather go to one who was experienced and successful regardless of
his grades in a course at school nine years ago :)

Now that you mention it, Gene, yes, I suppose experience does count for
a hell of a lot!!

Looks like we'll both be healthier as a result of this discussion :)

Another way of looking at it those earlier 98,99, 100%
.....half of all doctors were in the lower half of their class.

It's practical experience, plus good nurses having the doctor's back,
that matter most.

Experience and support staff is what matters most

....but that wasn't the point being made (i.e. percentages while having a purpose can be misleading)

No wonder medical care has been going downhill lately.

As my eldest sister was a nurse and my youngest sister is a nurse, for
my own health I had better agree with you, Wolf!!
