No, I've not tried the software yet, though I've used similar software (the WD "sync" software that came with my WD Passport). This allowed me to carry most of my computer (XP at the time) in my pocket. Then using another computer, I could use mine w/o leaving traces on the other. All was left on my portable drive.

That's the way that this is supposed to work. The only thing that the OP will need to do is provide power to the HDD to get the data off it to run the app. Either a data cable or drive enclosure (with power) will work. What's on the dead PC doesn't matter, it's what's on the HDD that does (to answer the non-boot issue).

And there's plenty of documentation here. Of course, it may take some playing around, and if the first time it fails, don't give up. It took me 3 times to get the WD Sync option to work for me.

There's also links about using it on VMWare Fusion & Oracle VirtualBox 3 (for Macs) that's detailed. It's all in just how much the OP is serious about doing this, it's going to take some playing around to get it done. When one can't get the HDD to boot, due to the PC being dead, with no install disc or COA, the options become slim.

I say this is worth a shot. If anyone has another (or better) idea, that would be good too. That would mean more options. It's time for the OP to step back in here and decide on a course of action.
