We have whole bunch of HP Scanjet 5200C sacners in every offices at every floor and at branch offices. We are only able to make this device work in Windows XP and never work in Vista.

All drivers and updated are downloaded from HP site, most recently on 6-9-2010:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...c=en&cc=us&dlc=en&sw_lang=&product=61254#N591

We are also unable to install this device in Win 7 - in neither USB nor parallel port.

1. sj662en.exe (driver ver 2.02 12-12-2001) installed OK.

2. sj661mu.exe (driver update ver 2.02 210-18-2001)
run this program in compatibility mode for Windows XP SP3
Fatal Error - setup is unable to continue
(note: in Vista, the error is : "This program is not windows (98) compatible)

3. co5319.exe (ver 1.0 2-19-2004)
The update cannot be completed. (note: same error in Vista)

4. sj630en.exe (ver 1.0, 2-19-2004)
Installed OK. Restart computer. (note: in Vista - this operating system is not supported)

5. sj700en.exe (ver 1.0 1-16-2002)
installed OK.

When starting the HP Scanjet Precision Scan programs, Win 7 show "scanner not responding" (note: same at Vista)

Your advices are much appreciated.

We need to know if you are running 64-bit or 32-bit Windows 7, also what version of Win 7 ... Pro, Ultimate, Enterprise, ???

If running Pro or higher it may be possible to get the drivers to work in VirtualXP, although this wouldn't be the ideal solution, so please specify the info and we could look for other possibilities.

OK, according to the HP website you listed, Vista and Win7 drivers are not available - basically they are no longer continuing to provide support for this older hardware.

You may be able to use them in Virtual XP.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx
Download and install the three pieces of Virtual PC - XP Mode (a reboot is required after step 2 and again after step 3), then enter Virtual XP mode and install the Windows XP drivers for your scanner, as well as any scanning software to use the drivers. Finally, try it! If it will work at all this is probably your only chance.

NOTE: When you filesave the scanned pictures, be sure to put them in a Windows 7 folder, not to Local Disk C:, as this is a virtual disk and will close once you close Virtual XP (it is not lost if they do put it there by accident. It will be there when you reopen VirtualXP but it is not available to Win 7 programs until you move/copy it).

Once the file is saved to a Win 7 folder it can be edited by any photoediting software, attached to emails, pasted into Word documents etc. You just have to get it into Win 7 via the Virtual XP Mode first.

Hello young707,
Have you checked compatibility?
Just an FYI for you.
It is always best to check with the software manufacturer FIRST. They will tell you if they have tested the product and the version, as well as whether or not it will work with Windows 7.
Check out the Windows 7 Compatibility site: (There you will find out about hardware and software compatibilty.)
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/en-us/default.aspx
There is a pulldown from which you can choose "hardware" and "software".
There are also some great articles, instructional videos and such to help with your Windows 7 at our Springboard site:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/default.aspx
In any event a lot of the times, Vista drivers will work in lieu of Windows 7 drivers, however, it's not 100%!
As stated previously, it's best to have the Windows 7 certified drivers installed.
Microsoft does have an official Windows 7 Support Forum located here http://tinyurl.com/9fhdl5 . It is supported by product specialists as well as engineers and support teams. You may want to check the threads available there for additional assitance and support.

Well there is no mention of the 5200C in the compatibility charts but it does say 3300C, 3400C, & 5300C are not compatible.

And John if you would read the posts you would see there were no Vista drivers, it's just one more reason they didn't upgrade their office to Vista!

So, every corner in the copy rooms, at every floors and branch offices, around the country, has old XP systems, just for using the HP 5200C scanners.

This keep reminding us: HP make lousy products and abandon driver support, soon after stop making this product. Microsoft keeps pushing new Windows versions, all lack old hardware drivers supports.

Yes, this is truley an HP issue, not Microsoft, it is HP that no longer supports the device by discontinuing driver support.

I think if you tried the virtual mode it may work pretty well for you because when you install the scanning software under XP mode it should even create a link from the W7 start menu. They click the link it opens the scanning software inside a Virtual XP window. The limitation is you may have to show them where to save the files and you are also limited to one instance (window) of VirtualXP at a time, so if they are running Internet hearts (no longer supported in 7 and a personal favorite of mine) in a VirtualXP window then they cannot open a second window to scan.

young707 - Epson usually does a fairly decent job of keeping their drivers up-to-date for their products, not always but usually.

P.S.
May I have the scanner and printer concession for the company? :listen:

Obviously they don't have a printer/scanner budget - that's why he wants to make the old ones work :p~

OK, load the Wndows Virtual PC and Windows XP mode. In the XP mode, trying to load every HP Scanjet 5200C drivers (shown in HP web site). Every program seems to load fine, except, same problem:
sj661mu.exe (ver 2.02 2001-10-18) setup error: fatal error: setup is unable to continue.

So, when trying to run HP Precision scan, the program never able to detect the scanner in the USB port.

Why are you trying to load all those drivers? You only load the ONE driver for your OS. SJ662en is the ONLY XP driver so it is the only one you should be installing under Virtual XP mode - uninstall all the rest.

You really should consider buying an all-in-one printer/scanner to replace your old hardware.

after we load the HP 5200C scanjet driver sj662en.exe (ver 2.02 12-12--2001), this driver CANNOT detect USB ports. We must also load sj661mu.exe (ver 2.02 10-18-2001) and sj630en.exe to get the USB port working. However, HP wrote lousy programs, these two updates are the key source of problem which failed to load in all OS (except original XP).

So frustrating.

Hi TrainableMan,

Thanks so much for your solution. It works!!! Now I have my 5200C working and don't have to spend on new one.

Best Regards,
