HD6850 Crossfire BSODs - losing my mind here!

Hi there,

I've come across plenty of threads on general crossfire/6850/6870 related topics with regard to BSODs in trying to fix my issue. Example: https://www.w7forums.com/ati-crossfire-bsod-t8355.html

Everything runs fine with Crossfire disabled, but enable it and launch any fullscreen 3D application (benchmarks/games) and it's an immediate BSOD for me.

I've tried:
updating all device drivers - all of them,
removing unnecessary software like virtual drives etc,
the catalyst hotfixes,
the obvious catalyst reinstall with driversweeper in between,
eventually even a fresh install of Windows on a blank partition, starting from scratch.

Nothing fixed it! Nothing.

As far as I can tell, the cards are running the latest BIOS revision. They're PowerColor Hd6850 1GB's.

It can't be the PSU. This system can run two GTX 460 768MBs in SLI, rock solid.

Specs:

- Windows 7 Home Premium x64

- Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD4 motherboard, latest BIOS (F15)

- 2x Power Color HD6850 1GB cards

- 4GB (2x2GB) OCZ Reaper HPC DDR3 PC3-12800 Dual-Channel Low Voltage Kit

- Intel Core i5 760 @ stock clocks (just in case)

- Corsair HX650w PSU (more than enough)

Any new suggestions?! I've attached minidumps from the last 4 crashes on the previous Windows install (since the new install had no effect)

Your crashes are caused by ATI display driver:

atikmdag.sys Thu Nov 04 23:47:56 2010

which is good and latest. Should work fine provided that you installed it correctly - at least it shouldn't bsod then. By "correctly" I mean you had uninstalled the previous driver first, and then used Driver Sweeper in safe mode to clear of remnants:

http://www.guru3d.com/category/driversweeper/

As far as I've read users feedback, Catalysts 10.10/11 do have crossfire issues. So, you may want to switch back to a more proof earlier version. You would also want to do so to check how your cards are actually doing, to see if bsod's stop. If bsod's happen regardless of Catalyst version, it's hardware related then - likely wrong clocks or deffective RAM.

Additionally,

1. You have Virtual Box and VMWare installed, disable 3D virtualization in them both as it may be related to your crashes.

VBoxDrv.sys Thu Aug 05 08:02:51 2010
Virtual Box
VMNET.SYS Mon Aug 10 08:04:50 2009
VMWare

2. Update:

iaStor.sys Fri Oct 02 15:58:50 2009
Intel Matrix Storage

AppleHFS.sys Sun Dec 27 15:44:58 2009
AppleMNT.sys Sun Dec 27 15:44:55 2009
Apple Mount Manager

gdrv.sys Thu Mar 12 23:22:29 2009
Gygabite Tools - check for updates

vhidmini.sys Fri Sep 28 13:21:57 2007
IVT SOFTWARE TECHNOLOGY Inc.

uninstall CPUID 2009 version, as you have another more up to date version of it:

cpuz132_x64.sys Thu Mar 26 19:17:23 2009
cpuz133_x64.sys Tue Mar 30 17:34:16 2010

- Corsair HX650w PSU (more than enough)

Any new suggestions?!

Corsair HX650w PSU - this is sure a good brand, but I can't vouch 650W is enough for 2 ATI 6000's CF.

If 650 is plenty for two GTX 580s (NCIX combo on sale and working), then yes, it is for two 6850s which are much more efficient.

I'm personally running into the same issues, as mentioned in another thread (similar setup too).

I'll do a memtest tonight because I've been running into non-identifiable crashes (unrelated to drivers, but BSOD regardless) and they've only started appearing after I somewhat goofed up a memory setting (which I reset).

I'll see afterwards if putting the BIOS back to its default settings help (with the CPU overclock and RAM underclock that were both deemed stable until my little ****up)..
