A recent post by Vijay Pande on the Folding@home blog shows that work on the next high performance GPU client is progressing well. The next iteration, dubbed GPU3, will be the first to support Fermi hardware and introduce core15 and core16 work units. The latest GPU beta (6.32) is available now from the Folding@home site.

Additionally an OpenCL port of GPU3 is in the works. According to Pande, the OpenCL client still has performance issues to be worked out for both AMD and NVIDIA GPUs. The source code for the OpenCL port is available from the OpenMM web site.

If you’re unaware, Folding@Home is a massive distributed computing project in which you download a small program that runs in the background and runs protein folding simulations for medical research.
