I find this thread becoming amusing because it is turning into a "He said, she said." Like the anti-virus threads.

This discussion will continue on ad infinitum, ad nauseum until the aliens finally decide to make CONTACT! :hmmmm2:

No, this thread is far better than those AV threads. I don't even respond to them anymore, if it is necessary to instruct someone to be sure to install an AV, I always say "install the AV of YOUR choice". I don't even bother giving recommendations anymore on that issue, and unless a member's system is infected and in need of help, I stay away from the subject altogether. It's like a revolving door.

Did you also consider that one of your anti spyware or anti-virus programs might be slowing it down. I've a this happen few times. I would update my anti-virus and then my web browsing would slow way down. Sometimes updates turns functions on in those applications that you turned off. Things like website checkers and so forth that actively scan sites you visit. Also andsome what didn't you like about FF. I have it installed on my old XP pro SP3 and my current win 7 pro 64bit with no issues. To me the problems with FF that people are having is their individual computer settings or configurations.

That is true, metalmania31. AV's, malware protectors, and even some Windows updates can cause problems. Along with security settings and browser add ons. I keep the add ons to a minimum, but do jack up my security a notch. On security and privacy, medium is a little low to my liking. I raised them to medium high. I also have layered AV protection, there may be a slight difference in speed, especially at the last 1% of a download, but I'm not on the forum complaining about anything being slow, due to my desire for heightened security. Security comes at a price, not only in cost (as in cash), but at a slight performance cost, too. Having plenty of RAM will help that a lot. FF is one of the fastest browsers on the market at this time, though it wasn't always that way. It was once a RAM hog, too. 3.5 started changing that for the better.

RE

Open Firefox and type about:config.
Use the filter above to find network. http.pipelining and double click on it.
Create a new boolean value named network.http.pipelining.firstrequest and set to True.
Find network.http.pipelining.maxrequests, double click on it, and change its value to 8.
Now look for network.http.proxy.pipelining and again set it to True.
Create two new integers named nglayout.initialpaint.delay and content.notify.interval, set them to 0.
Restart your browser and check a few heavy-loading websites to see if those changes worked or not.

I'm running FF 3.6.3 and finally turned off updates. I switched to Chrome for a couple of days and liked it because there are plenty of add ons now but I missed Firebug and the Chrome version just didn't make it for me. I do get crashes pretty often with FF. Once you get used to a particular browser it's difficult to switch.

roban, you're right. It's hard to switch browsers after using them for a while and liking the feel and all. Plus FF offers so many addons for most any need. But I don't have a problem with FF crashing. I just wonder what's making yours doing that way.

I figured it was some add on or other that was cause it catilley so I disabled them all, then started adding them back one by one, getting rid of the ones I don't use. So far I have had no crashes. I think it was the Java Console that is no longer supported.

I'm glad you mentioned the Java Console, I'll remove it from my laptop as soon as I close. I didn't realize it was unsupported anymore, it's still being offered for download.

Thanks andsome, for your useful post. Although I've uninstalled Java with no ill effects (must have not needed it anyway), this will help those who decide to keep it. I've never really understood what Java does, anyway. Is it supposed to be a type of Flash, or what?

Java SE Desktop Overview

Desktop Java technologies can be used to create rich client applications and applets that are fast, secure, and portable. This page introduces all of these technologies.

Most of the technologies are included as part of Java SE (also known as the JRE, or Java Runtime Environment), which is pre-installed on over 90% of all desktop systems on a wide range of operating systems. Other Desktop Java technologies are available as either separate downloadable Java extensions, or as open source projects on java.net. Finally, the Netbeans IDE with its integrated GUI builder brings everything together, allowing you to easily build your desktop application.

Nibiru, that was some interesting reading on that page you linked. Java, although used in some Windows apps, are included with most Linux and Mac platforms. Seems like Sun and Microsoft had a big falling out not long ago. Why is it that the majority of the time Microsoft is dragged to court, they simply take a bow and pay up? The WGA suit was different though. Microsoft stood to the end and won, although they spent who knows how much cash to defend themselves.

Firefox is slow

If you are broadband user than you can speed up your Firefox:
1.Type “about:config” into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:
network.http.pipelining network.http.proxy.pipelining network.http.pipelining.maxrequests
Normally browser make only one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several requests at once, which really speeds up page loading.
2. Change the entries as
Set “network.http.pipelining” to “true”
Set “network.http.proxy.pipelining” to “true”
Set “network.http.pipelining.maxrequests” to some number like 15. It will make 30 requests at once.
3. Right click anywhere and select New > Integer. Name it “nglayout.initialpaint.delay” and set its value to “0″. This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives.

You bet M$ & Sun had a falling out... BIG TIME! M$ used to have what they called: "virtual machine" technology. Same thing as JAVA!! They literally copied the code for their VM used in Windows. Sun sued them and won a big lawsuit about 10 years ago.

The court agreed with Sun and said that M$ was basically using a "cookie cutter" of Sun's JAVA technology. So M$ had to pay millions to Sun and cease & desist their virtual machine code.

Good advice Kristain! Looks like you've been to: www.speedguide.net

Their Tweaks section under the Broadband drop-down menu for Firefox is pretty good, although a little of it is out-dated. I have used their tweaks for several years and since FF has changed some of the settings in "about:config" only about 6-8 tweaks are relevant anymore.

Firefox / IE Browser Tweaks are here: http://www.speedguide.net/read_articles.php?id=2448

The tweaks are still relevant though on the settings that FF has not adjusted to match the ones shown.

There are some good tweaks for Windows 7 regarding the TCP/IP settings and such here: http://www.speedguide.net/read_articles.php?id=2574

I'm glad it turned out that way. Sun makes some of the best free VM's and other free software (including Java) in the world. Their products are better than VMWare ones, in my opinion. Plus, Sun is known for more than VM's.

Opera is faster than Firefox in several aspects, but it's page rendering is really slow.
