Feds warn PC users to disable Java due to security flaw

How do you disable Java
You can disable it in Firefox web browser in Add-Ons | Plugins

You can disable it in IE8 in Tools | Manage Add-Ons

I don't know if you can simply disable Java systemwide. You can
always uninstall it and reinstall it later if you find it necessary
and/or when the security hole is patched.
and what impact does doing so have on the operations of your
system?
Unless you use a web site or local program that depends on Java (and
most people don't) you will probably never notice it's gone.

Control Panel > Java > Java tab > View... button > System tab > clear every
checkbox under the "Enabled" column.

Since Windows doesn't require Java, and doesn't even come with a Java runtime
(unless preloaded by an OEM), the impact on the *system* should be zero. (I
use one single Java program on a regular basis, but it works fine with an
older JRE so I don't bother updating. I also don't "do" Java on the www.)

I have IE9/Win7 - what is your status as to Java Operating? It is
enabled on my machine. I also have Norton AntiVirus running (I know!
a lot of folks don't like it but it has served me well over the
years).

That doesn't work for me - only ver. 1.7 update 10 is installed and
available, and the Enabled check box can't be unchecked. I'm guessing
this dialog box is more intended for selecting between multiple
versions.

Hmm... That is possible, hadn't occured to me to actually try it. Duh.

It's on the Security tab - Disable Java content in the browser.

We were talking about disabling Java on the whole system, not just in
the browser. There doesn't seem to be a way to do it without
uninstalling it.

I wonder how that Security tab setting differs from disabling the
plugins from within the browsers?

That's Javascript, something totally different to Java.

So is the warning about Java or Javascript?

Java.

It's *always* about Java.

Java is broken more of the time, than it is fixed :-(

I finally decided to remove it altogether from here. I know of a couple
of sites which now won't work any more, but now, of course, I'll
discover how many there really are. Hopefully there won't be any that
really matter.

And what does that have to do with the topic? Java and Javascript
are two different things -- and the inherent vulnerabilities of
Javascript have been known for many years.

I found that by going to the Security Tab/certifications and removing
3 items listed I could then go back to java/view and uncheck java 1.7.0.
