Exporting email settings

J

John

Just added a laptop with Windows7 (Livemail)to my existing XP ( Outlook
Express)based desktop. Router is a Netgear N150.
I exported to a USB stick the email settings from the XP
and imported them into the new laptop. I cant access emails though on the
laptop. Comes back saying either user or password wrong. I,ve compared
settings in both PC,s and they are the same as you would expect.
I can access newsgroups fine on either machine.
Any advice much appreciated.

Check the port settings. Check the security settings. double check the
username and password.

Null out the pw field in the email account.
Ensure all other settings are correct (username, ports names and numbers, SSL, authentication)
Perform a Send/Receive
Enter the password when prompted and click the item to save the password.

Always include the version of Windows Live Mail when asking questions (especially if posting from Outlook Express) and the type of
email account (Pop3, IMAP, Http/DeltaSync).

You may have to take ownership of those files

EMail "settings" are NOT the same as Email.
You need to import the actual email data as well as the "settings".

Did you setup the SMTP and the POP3 address and your user name and
password into the new 'puter??

Could you explain how you exported the email settings, exactly.

I have done it multiple times from OE to WLM v.14. Maybe v.15 doesn't
import correctly?

You might want to ask winston in microsoft.windows.live.mail.desktop

Same route in all versions of WLM the only difference is the how one accesses the Account setup screen (Menu or Ribbon)

In WLM 11 (ver 15) and 12 (ver 16) - Alt F/Options/Email Accounts
- Import

An imported file (*.iaf) may import without a password.
Importing from OE or Windows Mail is acceptable since WLM is knowledgeable of OE/WM's *.iaf file format.

Many thanks for replies. Got it going after ratting around in
options/account.
Seemed to work after making some changes to the default account settings,
nothing that
got exported over on the stick. Somebody asked how I exported settings?.
Cant be exact as
Grandkids came over on weekend and now Desktop is totally kaput so I cant go
and look. From what I remember
there is a "export setting" in accounts or option and I just used that. The
laptop has the matching import
settings.
Many thanks again
John
