Detecting a Highjacker

I've run into a problem in Amazon on this PC, but none of the others I
have. When I want to order a book, a page that asks for my mail address.
I click the one I often use. I'm next carried to another page for
shipping options. I use Continue to get to the next page, which asks
Which method do I wish to pay. I immediately get spinning small circle
with the word "Loading below it." This can go on indefinitely.

I've thrown about everything I know to do. Re-install my FireFox
browser, scanned my main drive for viruses, erased cache, and recently
used SSL using Content in the Control Panel. Otherwise, I see no
anomalous behavior.

Possibly none of this deals with a Highjacker. If so what could I use?

In addition to running a virus checker you should run a malware scanner
and a rootkit scanner

How does it act using IE?

Could it be a Firefox addon? I've had some problems like that that were
attributable to some of them - NoScript is useful but can cause real (and
bizarre) problems, for example.

Yes, an add on can cause the problem.
(Had it happen!)
Try running with the add-ons, etc temporarily disabled.

I take it NoScript is an addon?

Tools, Addons, disable is one option. You can disable addons, etc. one
by one as you desire.
In programs / accessories / system tools there's a
IE (no addons) that you can start.

Or (Firefox this is), you can turn them all off for one session, by
Help, Restart with Add-ons Disabled...

Same problem.
Since it affects both FF and IE I am thinking it may not be
browser related. Anything in Hosts? Anything in the
net connection?
I use MS Security Essentials and Malwarebytes on the laptop.
Download the Linux boot disks of Kapersky 10 and Avira and
boot from them.

I was able to get by my problem by using Safe Mode. I have no idea if
that's helpful. It probably means the problem is not in Amazon.

Off to try some of the suggestions below.
