Default video player doesn't work

I just upgraded to Win7. It sets Media Player to default. I tried to
set VLC as the default player, but it still tries to use MP.

Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?

Where did you set VLC as default and did you set it as default for all the
video formats

Hi, Metspitzer.

Have you visited Control Panel | Default Programs? What did you do there,
and what results did you see?

And what is VLC? Oh, never mind. Bing solved that mystery: VLC Media
Player.

While I don't have VLC installed (obviously), I think I would click Control
Panel | Default Programs | Associate a file type or protocol with a specific
program. Then on the next screen, I would select .mpg or whatever other
extension I wanted and then click Change program and Browse to VLC's folder
and executable. This might get tedious for many media file types, but you
might try it and then post back with further questions. Someone here who
knows more than I do about these things can probably answer them.

Win7 is on my laptop and I don't use it much, but from memory it was a
right click option.

I did it the same you would with XPs "open with" command.

In Control Panel...look for Default Programs.
Setting it there would be your best bet.
You can do it for all file types that player supports, or for individual
file types.

Thanks, and I will try this when I get a chance as I use VLC for all
programs, but did I do something wrong the way I did it?

Can anyone else verify that the "open with" method is broken?

For some reason, the next time I tried playing a vid, VLC was the
default player without me doing anything.

Thanks everyone
